45ottoI want a new high power rifle
I have a 1917 springfeild action to burn
I shoot deer and coyotes
I own the following:
.35 whelen (my deer gun)
.338-06 (#1 son deer gun)
.30-338wm (#2 son deer gun)
.30-06 (too nice for the woods)
.280 rem (needs a stock)
7mm rm (back up)
.270 win (wifeys rifle)
6.5-06 (#2 son target)

I don't see where you need to fill a gap, I'd sell the action and fund a stock for the .280 Rem. The 1917 action is a little big and heavy to build on unless you want a Big 5 rifle.

MikeyBI'd have to agree with taylorce1, sell it and finish the .280 - great deer gun (along with many of the others). If you're dead-set on using the 1917 and want to fill a gap, I'd say you could use a .257-cal rifle since you have none. On a 1917, probably a .257 Weatherby Magnum or STW with a 26" barrel at the least - it won't be light but it'll have stupid amounts of velocity and kill 'em as far as you can see 'em.

30378I would go with a 25-06.
The 280 without a stock is nothing more than a tomato stake. Finish it out first.

Allan DeGrootI see a gap, a blatant one.
His 30-06 is "too nice for the woods"
If it is he needs a beater rifle in that chambering.
Of course I will let slide the idea that any rifle is "too nice"
to hunt with, because if it really is you managed to use rifle parts to create something other than a rifle, object d art mabey, but...

Magnum Hunter1Personally,
I wouldn't build a smaller caliber on a 1917. I would use it for a large medium bore or a big bore. Just my 2 cents. You don't have too many "holes" to fill. I'd build a big bore and get me a .223

The 1917 is the wrong action to fill your gap. ************

.223.

oldunAllan DeGroot and I think along the same lines.
"30-06 too nice for the woods"
What on Gods good earth can that mean?

There no such thing as having a rifle that is too nice to use, could a fellow have a wife too nice to kiss? The idea is.....
Use the 30-06, sell the action and get the 280 into working order.
Happy Hunting

oldunBucko,
You could well be right.
Me I have a rifle which would cost about $us7,000 to replace, it goes to the woods.
Happy Hunting.

Fish30114I would second the 22-250 or 223 suggestions.
Probably a new rifle it was me, and build a beater .06 with your 'open' action.
20 March 2009, 06:29
K20350How does anyone not have a .375 H&H??? Its almost blasphemy.

Too nice for the woods means it looks real good down at the range, not that he doesn't use it.

+1

roger is right, a .223 is a necessity when you shoot coyotes and deer primarily.

A 1917 action would be a boat anchor for a cartridge smaller than 30-'06.
If you have to use the 1917, a beater 30-'06 or a 375H&H is about right for the action size.
That being said, I don't really see a need in your tool box (coyotes and deer) for a 375.

45ottoPatern 14 Enfield .303 british
1917 Springfield .30-06
The '06 too nice for the woods is an exqusite example of a 1903A3.
I was thinking of a 9.3x62 but seems rather redundant with the whelen.

vinesi see you like the 6.5s.. And you dont have a .260 rem.??? ...
The 1917 action has some great attributes.
But, weight ain't one of them.
Keeping the bolt face as is, I'd do a 284 Winchester and never look back.

Henry HooverA 25 caliber something. On that action I think it would be the 257 stw.
22 March 2009, 08:59
390ishsounds like you need a 30-40 krag.
25 March 2009, 06:08
BuliwyfYep, there is a gap. Fill it with a .458 Winchester Magnum or .416 Ruger Magnum.
25 March 2009, 07:20
airgun1US Model of 1917 is a war horse and could be a 375 H&H or even a 416 Rigby or Rem.
US Rifle Model 1903 made in 1917 is a low numbered Springfield and is best left a wall hanger.

45ottoI did not mention the Marlin .45-70. That rifle seems to be all I want in the recoil dept. Just can't see shooting at coyotes with a .375 or .416.
I was thinking about a .45-70 bolt gun but feeding seems to me to be a problem.
The 1917 action should be heavy enough to make a 7x57 a real sweetheart to shoot. Might be something the princess could latch onto.
