i want to have just one projectile for my 340 for everything is there such a ''thing'' any recommendations ?? only for big game!!!!

225gr Northfork

I would reccomend you try the 225 and 240 grain North Fork bullet, and use the one that is most accurate in your rifle. I also shoot the 225 grain Barnes XLC, and 250 grain Nosler Partition Gold with excellent results. The North Forks outshine all others in one of my rifles, the XLC and North Fork equally well in another. Shoot them enough and they will tell you what they like. Good shooting.

i used 225gr.hornadys for both deer and elk with good results.

I like the 210 Nosler for plainsgame, the 225 Northfork is even better, and the 300 gr. Woodleigh RN is my darling for knocking them down in a hurry...

Fortunately my 338 Win. shoots the 210 gr. 3" high at 100 yards, the 225's 2" high and the 300 dead on, so I am not subjected to just one load, and these loads cover the whole spectrum...

I believe there is a proper bullet for just about every job and I hate to compromise myself with a single bullet. Bullet selection is of prime importance and much more important than choice of caliber, in other words I would rather have a 30-06 with a proper bullet than a 416 or 458 with the wrong bullet if I were hunting say a Cape Buffalo.

If what you are hunting doesn't bite back my choice would be the 225 A-frame. If it Does bite back the 250 gr A-frame.You won't believe the penetration you get with these bonded core beauties.

I use the 250 gr Nosler Partition for my everything bullet in this caliber, but Snowman's right (how ya doin' Snowman?), those A frames penetrate like there's no tomorrow. They just aren't that accurate in my particular rifle. - Dan

I hunted with the .340 exclusively for about 12 years. The .340 is truely a first rate cartidge.
It may sound boring but the 250 Nosler is never the wrong choice. That said the 225 Nosler and Barnes X are also bullets that will not let you down. The 210 Nosler is very flat but is not in the same class on over 500 pound game.

Well I'm trying to find out that same thing.. I have started with the 225gr NorthForks and I am still tinkering with them. I am happy with them don't get me wrong but I am still trying other things. I'm getting ready to try the 225 gr X's and the 230 gr Failsafes. If I were you I'd start with the Northforks and then go from there. Good luck

Try this for a recipe.
No mater the caliber, SD over .300, a well constructed bullet, at a velocity that will give you the desired trajectory for the game being hunted, with recoil that will not impare your shooting.
Works from the 6.5x54 to the 600 Nitro.

250 A-frame or 240 North Fork

For my 338 Win I hunt only (so far) with my "Alfabet" bullets. A-Frames and X bullets. When you absolutly, posativly, have to completely bore through whatever there is between you and its heart, these are my choices. penitration measured in multiple FEET. The 225gr Xbullet gives OK accuracy in my rifle but the A-Frames are very tight.

For hunting purposes, where BR acuracy is of no particular import, I'd probably feel O.K. with whatever premium bullet was on sale at the time. (But, I'd buy a bunch of them so I didn't have to putz with a lot of loads in the future.)

The above is actually intended as humour, but you probably won't go far wrong with any of the semi-custom premium bullets from 225 gr up.

I HAVE 2- .340s One is a Weatherby and one is the 995 Sako.
The Weatherby LOVES heavier bullets and runs the Sierra 250 GameKing into one ragged hole. If I run some of the Sierra 300gr MatchKings through it it cleans up the hole. The 250 GameKing will group 8" at 1000 yds.

THe Sako with the thinner bbl won't group anything over 210 gr into a bushel basket so I have it fed with Nosler 210 partitions.

I have never tried any of the NorthFork bullets but since I have never recovered any of the one shot kill 250gr GameKings from anything I have shot with it, I can't speculate on the performance(huh?)
