9,3x62 - shooting distances??
Three questions
1)What distances can someone shoot with confidence with this caliber?

2)I know it's a midrange caliber but it will be capable of knocking down a red deer at 250 metres??

3)For shooting at that distance, how much will the bullet drop if the rifle is zero it at 100 metres??

Thanks
LG

I don't have any tables handy, but its common for 286 gr bullet to have the MZ velocity of around 2400 fps. And since I use yards and inches. I would say that with a 100 yard zero, the bullet would hit maybe 4 or 6 inches low at 200 and maybe another 4 inches at 250 yds. You could hold on Red deers back and still make a good hit. The only way you can really know is to shoot that far at some targets and then measure the drop. The drop tables are ok but they are all just math calculations and well every rifle and sights are diferent and the air is always changing along with temp.

Thanks George !!
I also believe that maybe using 250 balistic tips or Barnes X may help something.

I've used to the 9,3x62 on both roedeer and moose at ranges up to 250m. It's perfectly capable of shots at that distance.
I normally sight it in so that it is no more than 6 cm over line of sight on it's way to target. That also gives me a drop of ca 25 cm at 230m (real world data).
Norma has a bullet trajectory calculator on their wabsite that is quite good by the way.
Norma
Oops, forgot to say that that was with handloaded 286 grain Alaska and 286 grain Oryx bullets.

Allthough primarily a sub 200yd round I think the 9.3x62 should be fine at 250 for even the biggest reds given good accuracy. I use 232gr Oryx or Vulkan at 2,600fps and it shoots to the same trajectory as my 7x57.

I know the 300 meter flip-up rear sight on my grandfather's old 9.3x62 civilian Mauser is far from unused....

So oit should be capable of knocking roo's at 300 yards then [Smile]

Lorenzo,
I reload for the 250 Nosler BT. At about 2600 fps, my load is +3"@100, about dead on at 200, and about -3"@275. Those are approximate from memory. Ku-dude

I am fully confident to shoot either of mine out to 300 or so yards. I shoot the 250 gr Barnes X at 2650 fps in 24" barrels (FN and Husqvarna Mausers). I have used this load on game from springbuck to eland. My farthest shot was a springbuck at 230 yards. My closest shot was an eland at 25 yards. The X worked beautifully.

Thanks guys, it seems I must feel confident (and practise a lot once I get it finish).

Ed,
What load are you using??

Thanks

A bit late, after your confidence is up already, but I've used my 9,3x62 on roe deer out to 250 meters (measured!) with the 247 grs RWS Cone-Point bullet, and on red deer with the 285 grs Norma ....ah, was that the Alaska? I'd never sight is zero at 100 meters though. The 247 grs bullet gives you a drop of 7 cm at 200 meters, if you sight in at +4 cm at 100 meters (from memory). If you can't find any other info just e-mail me and I'll dig into some old stuff that I've got lying around, but using one the many available ballistics programmes should give you all the info you need before you head out to the range to confirm! I've always found that my shooting skills are limiting my shooting range more than the calibre.

I shoot a 26" barrel and 2700 FPS is not a problem with the 250 BX or Nosler Bal. Tip...I get 2560 with a 286 gr. bullet, 2450 with a 300 gr. Swift and 2379 with a 320 Woodleigh, so I shoot as flat as a 308 or 30-06...300 yards is easy enough.

Lorenzo,
I checked my reloading program, and I was off by about 15yds in my estimate of trajectory at 275yds. My reloading program shows that the 250BT @ 2600 fps is 3"@100, 0@220, and -3"@260. It is one killin' SOB! Ku-dude

The 9,3x62 is far better than most people think in terms of long distance shooting. I have use my 9,3 out to distances over 200 meters, and I have seen moose being taken at well over 300 meters with no problem at all. And thats with a 286 grain Norma Alaska. Dont worry about loosing knockout power, the 9,3 will deliver without problem. Just use a soft bullet if you plan to shoot at 300+ since the barnes x wont open at extremely low speed!
Good luck!!
