Powder for the whelen !
I use RL-15 for my whelen, I looked at the Aliant web site And using a compressed load the velocity was very good with the 250 grain bullets, and the listed pressure was still quite low. In my rifle I loaded just off the lands . I have room for a little more powder and I get pver 2600 Fps for 250 grain speers. I am thinking of awitching to the Hornady. Have you tried RL=15 ? And had anything work better ?

I've had excellent accuracy results (though not top velocities) with H414. Varget has also served me well. I've also worked a bit with Re10x with the lighter bullets and had very good results.

Thomas Jones,

I believe that the Reloader 15 is the best all around powder for the 35 Whelen. It has given me the highest velocity and near the top accuracy. With the 250 grain Speers, top loads run in the 57-59 grain range for a modern bolt action rifles.

2600fps with 250 grainers is good velocity, I don't beleive you can get a heck of a lot more out of it. You are less then 100 fps from 338 WM loadings with this bullet weight.

I normally shoot 225 grain Barnes TSX's and they give me all I need with a top load of Reloader 15.

If you want to try other powders, I can recommend, IMR 4320, IMR 4064, and Varget. For heavier bullets, 275 and higher, try IMR 4350 or Reloader 19.

Good shooting,
BigBullet

Another vote for 4064.

Ball C #2 gives me top speed and accuracy with 250 Hornady RN but not nearly as fast as yours cause my Rem 7600 barrel is only 21.5"

I will up you one with both bullet and powders reccomendations. 250 Speers or Honadys with either 57.5 grains of Varget or same charge of VV N-140. With a slight preference to the Speer bullet and N-140. All 4 combos are good for 200 yard groups @ less than MOA.

Velocity is right at 2610 FPS for these loads. Never tried Re-15, but it should work great also.

It seems we are all in the sort of the same ball park for powders, RL-15 varget IMR 4064 seem to be the top listed choices and they are all about the same burning speed. I will bet the 414 is good too, I use it my .257 roberts and my 7X57 and it is very good , but it sure is a dirty powder...tj3006

I am using RL-15 and Sppeer Hot core 250's. 57 grains gives me 2450 to 2470 out of my 22 inch barrel. 59 grains only gives me another 40 fps. At 57 grains I have shot( with witnesses) severl sub moa groups. I'll take the accuracy over the extra speed.

I hope the columns don't mess up too bad but the net of it is, Varget and AA-2015 work in mine. I pretty much shoot the 250 Hornday RN now for fun and death ray destruction on whitetails. All of the above loads may not be suitable in your Whelen. Mine is an old custom chamber and long barrel.

In the Barnes manual, they recommend H322 (51.5 grs. max), RL15 (57 grs. max), and H4895 (53 grs. max) for the 250 gr. Barnes X-bullet. Wink

I have used both H322 and Varget with success. thumb I have read that IMR 4064 is one of the BEST for this application though. bewildered

I use 61.5 grains of H4350 behind a 250 grain Hornady spire point or whatever they call them now. I can get 5 shot clover leaf groups at 100 yds. The velocity is running 2480. I know it's not in the Hogdons manual but that's why we reload isn't it? Tried 4064 and it didn't work all that good for me.

I just did a little checking at my load notes, ant the Aliant powders web site. Here is what aliant says. Hornady 250 gr Round nose over 59.5 gra of RL-15 gives 2550 Fps and only 48,400 cup ! My load is 60 grains and it gave 2617 last summer on a hot day. Thats one reason I like RL15 in the whelen It would be hard to put enough in the case to get a really gross overload with 250 grain pills, and with .225s it would be even harder...tj3006

RL15 as first choice, IMR4320 as second choice

If you start loading 225gr bullets give IMR4064 and H322 a try.

Col Whelen recommended 56 grains of 4064, with a 250 grain bullet. I have been shooting this load since the early 1970's, vels with a 250 grain Speer are over 2600fps, and with a 225 Ballistic tip, right at 2700 fps. It worked then, and it works now!

Good Luck

Roll EyesYou might get good results with WCC846 and the heavier bullets. The price is definitely right. In everything I've used this in I've gotten good performance. The one exception was in my 358X404 IMP. Even with magnum primers I got hang fires. It is quite similar to Bl-c(2) so 2500fps. with a 250 gr. bullet can reasonably be expected. Winkroger

I fumbled around with several different powders in my .35 Whelen Rem. 700 Classic before trying RL 15. 1 1/2 to 2 inch groups became Sub minute with several 5/8" groups recorded. 58.5 grains in Rem. Brass behind 250 Noslers averages 2,525 fps. This from a handy 22" barrel. It's accounted for 3 bull elk and a couple of moose. My Wyoming Shiras Moose was shot at 280 yards. There's certainly no reason for me to switch loads.
