I was wondering if anyone knew anything about the Ruger scout rifle? I was thinking about buying one, but I would like to get several opinions first. I'm planing on using it for hunting. And wondering if it would group well at 300+ yards?

I've never been able to predict with any degree of certainty whether a rifle would shoot good groups or not without actually shooting it. My 'smith says that rifle barrels are like people, in that every one is unique.

I think that the Ruger Scout rifles are hideously ugly, but I don't have much use for a flash hider or a high capacity detachable magazine on a bolt action rifle.

Have shot a couple of them.
Gallon jugs at 300 yards with the standard peep sights is pretty easy.

i took the scout pitcany rail off of mine... and used the ruger rings that came with the rifle... got a zeiss conquest 3x9x40 on ...it'll shoot moa with hornady steel match...get some of the extra 3 or 5 shot ruger mags.. they come with a cover, you can carry them easy in your pocket...the flash hider doesn't do anything for me, but the threaded barrel is just begging for a supressor...i like the laminate stock, you can change the lop with the shim blocks that come with e gun...i paid $750 for mine, used... i dont think it'd had more than 20 rounds thru it...buy 1 if you get a chance, you won't be dissapointed....

I'm torn between the elegant, to me, CZ Full Stock in 9.3X62 or a rebarrel of the Ruger Scout in .358 Winchester. Packy

I'm not so sure this is much of a decision. Full-Stock all the way!

Friend has a couple of them. I shot the one and it shot very well. My opinion is the barrel is too short and I don't care for a flash hider on my rifle. The magazine system isn't the greatest because they don't lock in tight and can roll back and forth and in the one position it won't feed. They should have fitted those better. You might take a look at Mossberg's version of that. Not sure what calibers the Mossberg comes in. That reminds me Ruger is coming out with a rifle called the Guide Rifle and it looks like the Scout Rifle but is in much larger calibers, but it's not set up for a Scout scope nor does it have a removal box magazine.

Love to see the Guide Rifle in .308. I think that's what your going to end up with in the 30-06 caliber anyway with that barrel length.

Not arguing with you, but I've had a lot of short barreled rifles in my time and the loss of velocity wasn't as bad as some may think. It's dependent on caliber and powder choice too. Grant you that 26 inch tube is going to harvest a lot more velocity.

Love those rifles but someone put the bolts on the wrong side!

I've had a Ruger M77RSI for close to twenty years and a Gunsite Scout for two. Not much difference in the two weight and length wise. The Scout is more accurate than the International but in the real world deer aren't a tiny target. I've gotten 1 1/2" groups at 200 yards with the Scout. Velocity with either rifle is within 100 fps of my 22" barreled M70 so you don't lose much using a short tubed .308.

I've had problems with one early five round poly mag. Ruger replaced it without a quibble. The rest work just fine but I don't put any odd stress on them.

Does anyone know some good loads to use with the scout?

Hey Blaserguy. I have two Sako fullstocks right now. So N+1 shouldn't be a problem. Have L579s in 243 and 308. I enjoyed your picture. Thanks Bob d Builder did you pick up a Scout?

I just use an original scout rifle No 5 SMLE Jungle carbine. The mag on the Ruger is a full time pain in the backside. They should of made it a double stack mag so it does not hang so low.

I would see how the Scout rifle comes to the shoulder and if you like it, buy one.

My Ruger GSR quickly replaced my Remington 700's as my "go to" rifle. Way smoother action after some dry fire practice, trigger took all of a minute with some fine grit sandpaper to smooth out. Short, light and handy and plenty accurate enough to hunt out here in the sagebrush country. Mine will do sub-3/4MOA with 175g SMK's at 100 yards when I do my part (which isn't easy off a backpack and a 2-7 scope). My magazines rock very little (much less than the Mossberg offerings I've looked at in the gunshops). And the stock also feels much better than the Mossbergs I've checked out. Ruger also just announced a composite stocked version that is almost a pound lighter if that matters to you.

I like mine. Doesn't fill any special need of mine but it is short, light and shoots great.

I've got one one in a older style boat paddle stock, I thought they looked ugly in the standard stock and I couldn't get the right length of pull even with all the spacers in place, drilled the peep out with a 4mm drill and put the qr swivels in the side of the stock so it sits nice on the back and nothing digs in. Shoots, feeds and points well, what's not to like?

We love the two we have. Both are legitimately MOA rifles with decent ammo (5 5 shot groups). My son took his to Africa our last trip when he could have chosen from a lot fancier rifles. We mounted Leupold 2.5-7s in the normal position. Not as fast as the "scout scope" but much more accurate
