Does this happen with your Tikka Rifle ?
This aggravates me no end. It happens with rounds in my Tikka T-3 in 30.06 and Tikka T3X in .300 Win Mag.
I fill the detachable mag, chamber the first round and shoot. The tip of the second round in the stack becomes damaged as in the photo, but the round underneath that is perfect. It happens with both Barnes TTSX and Swift Scirocco projectiles. I know it happens under recoil. The closing bolt depresses the round underneath just enough that the projectile tip slams against the lip of the magazine's front wall and the tips become damaged and chipped. Then when the second round is shot the following round in the stack is damaged in turn. I'm not sure if accuracy is affected at all and I haven't missed anything shot at but I prefer to not have this. Has anyone else had this issue and, more importantly, is there any way to fix it ?

Sorry the photo is not great but I think the problem is clear.

Most likely what is happening is as you are chambering the first round the drag on the 2nd round moves it forward enough to touch the front of the magazine and is damaged during recoil.

Happens with other rifles also.

That little bit of damage well have no noticeable effect on its shoot ability.

Yes it does...

I think it is because there is no decent shoulder in the magazine to keep the cartridge in place during recoil.
I have this problem esp. with Norma ammo (i.e. the lead tip gets damaged). As it aggravates me, too, I mostly shoot Nosler Accubonds whose nose seems to withstand the hit.

.30-06 T3 lite.
I have the same problem also with the 5 shot magazine.

Just curious are they crimped?. Have you measured the OAL to see if it has changed. I measure to the ojive. It appers to be a pretty good hit from the recoil. does it ride over the front of the magz. You might chanfer the edge of the magz, and see if it elimates the damage.most all my magz. are cut away on the front edge

If the mag does not have any ridges on the side to stop the shoulder of the case moving forward in recoil, then you could try sticking a small piece of car tyre to protect the bullet tip.

If its only the top round in the magazine its probably from the bolt pressing down the front of the cartridge in the magazine. Not from recoil. Try just chambering a round and not firing and see if the damage still occurs. When you push the bolt forward the tip of the bullet is probably being pushed down enough to catch the edge of the magazine and chipping the tip. I would think if it was from recoil it would happen to all the rounds in the magazine.

You could mill or take a chainsaw file and make a small groove for clearance in the front where the bullet gets pushed down. Check it without firing and see if this is what happens first.

Yup, my 3006 does this.

Doesn't seem to make much difference at normal ranges but it does piss me off when I look at the bullets. Big Grin
