I think I may have hemmed and hawwed too long. I just finished reading an old article on the .358 Winchester, and was thinking how nicely it would complement my 7x57, while not duplicating the 7x57s thunder!

Oversimplified, there are two kinds of folks in this world. The first kind just picks a decent caliber, learns to shoot and goes forth to slay anything and everything reasonably (or even unreasonably) within the limitations of that caliber.

The second kind, of which I became a member to my chagrin, ponders all of the imponderables and ends up with a safe full of specialized rigs, then still worries if maybe there is a situation for which one does not have just EXACTLY the perfect combination of bullet weight and muzzle velocity and scope power range and rifle weight and barrel length and shoulder angle of his cartridge and maybe this or that or the other or....AUUGGHHH!

Jim, I agree. I'm afraid many of us have "outsmarted ourselves" and made our hobby a "second job." "Matching the Gun to the Game" has become a sort of elitist mantra in the last twenty years. If one wants to hunt all manner of NA game, just pick a cartridge of reasonable power (308, 30-06, 300), scope it and learn it! Then go forth and slay all manner of beast's!

If I lived in Virginia, I'd get a 308 and call it good.

There you go Dogger! Dont buy no stinking 30-06. Mine has got me covered from coyotes to Elk +. So where does a guy go from there? Id love a 358 for Elk in the brush, but Ive got an 06. Id love a flat shooting 270, but the 06 works pretty good. No chance to justify expansion from there except to the extremes.

Get either the 270 or the 358 and enjoy going through the mind numbing maddness again in the future, much eayser to specialize with those loads. Then afterwards you can go through this nonsense every time you go into the field as well.. Which gun should I take today?? [Big Grin]

Hmmmm! The .270 is fine, as long as you can later include the following:

.22LR
.338
.416

I can agree with that, and the .270 is a great choice. The 7MM Rem Mag would be better for a one gun hunter though.

Anyone who thinks the 30-06 is better than the 270 or visa versa is just blowing smoke...They are as close to identical as can be...at least in effect on game and I doubt that you could find a practical difference in trajectory considering the human body is a blob of quivery flesh.....and one could about as soon wiggle on target as he could off target...

Looking in my safe there is everything from 22 rimfires to a 470 Rigby Double. The very LAST gun I will part with is my 270 Winchester! My old companion and meat gun par excellence!

Good Hunting, "Z"

Oh yea, and there is my wifes lefthanded 270 in there also.
