If you Had to be a one gun man!
.338WM loaded with 225-grain TSXT (blue tip) for all around hunting in Alaska, and maybe with the same bullet but 180-210 grains or so for smaller game.

Must say the .30-06, killed Grizz, blacks, moose and caribou. I recall back in the day the 2 rifles I owned was a 760 aught six and a Finnbear .338 win. The pump aught six and 220 grain is all I ever needed. Now days I have quite a few rifles with zero kills. Building up another Remington 700 aught six, with so many after market parts I'm blending it. Yes......the .30-06

I'm old enough to go with my heart and say a 7x57. However, I could be perfectly happy with any of the "standard" rounds: .308, .270, .280, .30-06. And since I reload, perhaps a .35 Whelan, .338-06, 9.3x62, or even a .338 magnum would be more flexible. But that's a big maybe. Now, let's get down to serious business - just how many fairies can dance on the head of a pin?

OK Brad O, even your daddy would admit to his friends that the 30-06 was probably the better all around rifle!! beer

But hey,the 270 is very close to perfection! so I'll have to give you a walk on that one! Wink

I know this is a bit off the wall, but I would have to consider my .416 Taylor. It's easy to shoot and will take anything in the world except Blue Whale. I can load it for just about anything. It's good at 400 yards and 30 feet and everything in between.....Tom

I'd pick the 338 WM. finished no more than 8 lbs & topped with a Leupold 2.5-8

Lotsa bullet selection (styles & weights) to cover anything big to small.

I wouldn't lose any sleep if I had to hunt the world over with any caliber mentioned..I've always been more bullet minded than caliber minded..I would rather have a good bullet and less caliber than a big bore with the wrong bullet..The correct bullet weight, with the proper construction at the proper velocity makes up for caliber every time.

That's pretty much the crux of the matter. I agree.

There are plenty of cartridges that would fit this bill, but if I had to pick only one rifle out of my safe for all of North America, it would be my .300 Weatherby.

It would have to be a 7x64 140-180 grain bullets, or a 280 rem possibly Ackleyised (is that a word).

I asked this question to a friend and his reply made a lot of sense, 12ga., Rem 870. I was thinking one rifle, not one gun. In Iowa we must hunt deer with a shotgun. Over the years the slug gun has become accurate. Taking a deer at 200 yards is not uncommon. Rifled barrels and sabot slug have changed things. Change barrels to smoothbore and I'm hunting things with wings. I have shot two bears with a shotgun and believe me they go down....Tom

For North America - 300 Weatherby. 25-26" barrel.

One load - 180 gr TSX or 200 gr A-Frame

two loads - Fast 150 gr load.

didn't notice the one gun part myself and would have to agree the shotgun can change barrels to need and cover the spectrum.Don't see anybody grouse or pheasant hunting with a rifle

Ray, well said! On several occasions (mostly deer hunting), I have used a larger caliber than necessary along a bullet too tough at the distance the shot was taken. I'm sure I would have had better results with a heavier, non-premium, soft point bullet. As a result, I seldom use my 300 win mag for deer hunting anymore.

This one is easy for me

I've carried the same rusty Remington 700 in 30-06 with 150's for a very long time now

From prairie dogs to elk here in the lower 48 then Rock Hyrax to Kudu in Africa

I've never felt under gunned

Heck! I'm nearly a one gun hunter anyway

Jack knew a little something...

The 270 also makes a 22% smaller hole and shoots 150fps faster, on average, for the trouble. They are both great cartridges.

10% is the diameter difference

150 vs 150......they are nearly the same 3k round with the 27 having a better BC

For lower 48 . 6.5 Creedmoor. Ruger Hawkeye Predator. It will do great on everything from elk to fox with the 130 gr TSX at 2900 fps. For more specialized predator hunting. The 144 Lapua fmjbt . For longer range ruminates the 140 gr Matrix or Hornady SST . all at around 2780-2840 fps.
I'm surprised no one said the 243 win or 257 Bob

Phil Shoemaker : "I went to a .30-06 on a fine old Mauser action. That worked successfully for a few years until a wounded, vindictive brown bear taught me that precise bullet placement is not always possible in thick alders, at spitting distances and when time is measured in split seconds. Lucky to come out of that lesson alive, I decided to look for a more suitable rifle."

Quit quoting JACK O'Conner on the .270...If you knew him he would admit the 30-06 had the edge as an all around caliber, and hey that just makes since, but the edge ain't a lot! Eeker

I'll pick a caliber just for the hell of it..It will be the 338 Win. and only because there are some big mean Brown and white bears in North America..I wouldn't hesitate to hunt them with the 30-06 and a 200 or 220 gr. Nosler partition if I had to and I would be successful, but I would feel a bit better with my .338 loaded with 300 gr. Woodleighs. This is why the subject has always been without substance.

I agree, I can think of at least 2 or 3 O'Connor passages that claim the 30-06 is better.

And a 150 .277 is a shit bullet compared to a 220 .308 bullet.

When JOC was touting the Win .270, you could buy a milsup 03 for 4 or 5 bucks. No way could Winchester compete against that. So they paid JOC the big bucks to say that the .270 was lightning in a bottle.
Before you .270 faithful have a hissy, it's a good round but if not for the constant ballyhoo of JOC, it'd probably be just another forgotten round.
