9.3x70 Expert Magnum PICTURES ADDED!!!

Dirk Rohrmann

"Expert" is the trade name for ammunition reloaded by Reimer Johannsen but for the 9,3x70 Magnum he gave up to produce his own brass. Today he is using .404 brass from Norma.

His standard load is either 250grain A-Frame / 300grain A-Frame or Woodleigh SN/Solid in 300 grain but you can also order 320 grain.

Powder is R907 from RWS and he uses Federal Magnum primers.

Dave Kiff will do the reamer.
Redding will do the dies.
After this first batch of brass I will make more from 404 Brass. It is an easy form job.

Nice thread. I got my brass from Horneber (Expert).
But soon changed to Norma 404. Rel dies from Lee, they work fine for me and cost only about 70â‚¬.
Action P17 with rebored barrel. Reamer from Clymer. If you are interested in more information just drop me a mail.

I believe Jamison will eventually make basic 404 brass available. It will be a while, he has bit off way too much too soon.

Anyway, when the basic 404 brass is available (from whatever source), I'll get a bunter made for the 9.3 x 70 marking. Maybe Dieter doesn't need his any more?

Take a look at my other post on the 9.3. I just put together this rifle with a 375RUM necked down to 9.3mm. This rifle shoots 3150fps with a 250 nosler balistic tip and IMR4350. This is just plain a great rifle. I'd be happy to share data with anyone who wants to. My Advice go for it.

That is kind of weird. I didnt see 9.3x64 listed on that Horneber list posted above, but I pretty sure that Huntington has such brass for sale. I read an article online about the 9.3x70 seems like a really interesting round. Let me see if I can dig it up. You will have to forgive me for lack of computers skills.

I will order a reamer next week, and talk to Hornady and Redding about reloading dies.

I think I will have an intermediate form die for bringing the 404J on down.

I will mark my barrel in German as 9,3 x 70mm and in English as 9.3/404J.

The Expert Cases are about $2.00 each with shipping and customs.

The Norma brass looks like it will hold up better over time, but the Expert brass is just fine.

After the Norma brasss is necked down it would be a good idea to anneal it.

I think this cartridge is about the maximum practical for the 9,3 bore size. Anything bigger and we are just burning powder to make more recoil and wear out the barrel faster.

Now I must find a 9,3 x 57 reamer and save for some more brass.

I wish to thank all the people on this thread who have helped me with this quest.

Well,

I now own a grinder, and hope to have a mill and lathe up and running by the spring time.

I will build it myself then.

I will use a Sako style stock for comfort and recoil control.

25" barrel.

I should slap the 300 RUM barrel back on for a bit. If it shoots It might be fun to make it a switch barrel rig.

Huntingtons does carry 9.3 x 64 brass made by Horneber. Interestingly, Horneber marks it HDS 9.3 x 64 on the base. I have both the Horneber and RWS brass in 9.3 x 64. Both brands look fine, but the RWS looks finer.

Thanks lawndart.

On an aside, if you switch barrel it, would the extractor be big enough? .535 for the RUM case and .545(est.) for the 9.3 Expert case. It seems miniscule in number comparison, however the extractor thins greatly at the edge.
I'm probably overthinking this.

After that it is off to Montana for a barrel.

First I have to put together the damp box for rust bluing. Off to the cash 'n carry for 3/4" plywood and some plexiglass for the port hole.

Firster I better finish my charts tonight. No chart, no money. I hope medicare doesn't go completely bankrupt before I get these rifles done

Thread kind of fell off, what happened?

Going to do a 358 Norma on a Sauer 80, and 8mm Remington Magnumon a Weatherby MKV this Spring. Was thinking about doing a 9.3x64 on some kind of MKV if I can find a 30-06 bolt faced full sized Mark V.

Was interested in how the 9.3x70 worked out.

Might take a 375 CZ 550 and do a 9.3x70 on it. What do you think?

Not to completely bring back the past, but I am looking at this still as my next rifle. Was going to be a 376 Steyr on the M1999 SA, but I want more range with that power.

This is quite a caliber.

It is over bore, that is no sin these days.

They are easy to make by converting a Mauser 1898, or a Winchester Model 70 classic. If you can find one in 300 RUM, that is an easy way to go. The "standard" magnum size will work with a little more 'er work.

Tom in Cody came up with a more efficient cartridge. It is the 375 Ruger necked down to 9.3 and trimmed to 2.500". Just re-barrel your Ruger rifle, and save the old barrel.
