308 Norma loads?

A left handed 308 Norma Mag of some historical significance is coming to live with me. I'll post some pics when I get home from the slope but I am curious what those of you who have loaded for it have found to be the best powders.

I will be testing 180 grain Partitions, 200 grain Accubonds, 220 grain Hornady and Sierra round nose and the 220 grain Partition. I might throw in some Sierra 220 grain Matchkings for fun.

I have on hand, IMR and H4831, Vihtavouri N160, and IMR, AA and H4350. I plan to pick up some RL22 as well. I would expect any of these to work well with the selected bullets but am always open to suggestions. Thanks in advance gentlemen.

You don't need anything more than RL22, the same as for the .300 Win Mag.

4350, 4831 and RL22 will all provide good velocity and accuracy with the bullets mentioned.

When I had mine I used 180gr Accubond and RL22 and 7828. 7828 gave "maybe" a touch tighter group in my rifle but I had a lot more of RL22.
So RL22 it was.

Mart I have had 6 or 7 , 308 Norma rifles over the years. Most had a long throat (freebore) and would handle some pretty heavy max loads. I have had a couple rifles with a standard throat and max loads in those rifles was several grs less than some of the long throated rifles. Be very careful using loads from other peoples rifles.Strongly suggest cutting back about 5 grs of powder and working up 1 gr at a time til you find the Max safe load in your rifle.

Absolutely. I picked up several boxes of brass and reloads but have been pulling bullets and starting over working up loads. I'm headed to the range Monday for my first session with it. Trying 180 grain Partitions, 220 grain Partitions and Sierra RN's and some old 180 grain Herters wasp waist sonic missile tails just or grins. H4831 and Vihtavouri N160 are my two powders for now.

Mart, please keep us informed. I, too, have a 308 NM that was just completed, and I need to do some load work up with it.

I hesitate to say this because of the obvious meaning, but it would be nice to have a jumping off point for mine (you doing the heavy lifting...). I haven't even had the time to determine free bore yet. Trips to MD Anderson keep taking up all my time!
