That may have been true ten years ago, but other companies have caught up.

I have a Burris Fullfield II that I'll pit against any Leupold Vari X III in mechanical and optical quality, and Burris' warranty is as ironclad as Leupold's.

Also, it's hard to take seriously any recommendation that so quickly dismisses anything made by Zeiss.

Oh come on Ray, you know that Zeiss would work on any "Real Hunter's" rifle Big Grin.

They are both good scopes.

HP, I'll second your assessment of Burris. A few years ago we bought a Burris Compact in 2X7 and it worked out so well we have the same scope on all our rifles now. Great product and great customer service. thumb

It's simple, I got 4 rifles and I got 4 Leupolds thumb

Both scopes are great. I prefer Leup. especially the trim 2.5x8. I have (4) & the only other scope I probably would buy is the Zeiss. I've tried just about every other brand & on anything that recoils, it gets a Leup. VXIII.

If you're into nostalgia, The Leupold is a good choice roflmao
Both are great scopes.

I have used Zeiss optics since 1967, to make my living in the remote wilderness of western Canada as well as for sport. I have and use a Zeiss West German 4x, several B&L scopes and many Leupies and have shot about everything else, including S&B, Wollensak and Kollmorgan.

For a binocular or spotting scope, I will ONLY buy Zeiss or Leica, period. I seriously doubt that I will ever buy any other rifle scope than Leupold again, my LPS is optically the equal of my Zeiss and the new VX and FX lines really impress me.

Leupold. I've tried/own every brand. There is no better scope out there. Regardless of price. jorge

The Leupold costs about $400.00, has a field of view of 37', an average eye relief of 4", and weighs about 11.5 oz

The Zeiss costs about $450.00, has a field of view of 33', an eye relief of 4", and weighs about 13 oz

However the Zeiss will pick up a lot more light at dawn and dusk.

I'd pick the Zeiss but pay $30.00 more and get the 3 x 9 x 50 which has a 37.5' field of view and weighs 10.5 oz and definitely will give you a bigger and better picture in low light!!

There is quite a difference in size and weight between those two.

I just opened the box on a new VX3 2.5-8 and I will shoot with it Thursday. I will bring two 3-9 Conquests along too on other rifles.

If the new Leu VX3 is as good or better than the Conquest I will say so.

I have the new Leu VX3 2.5-8 mounted now on a Kimber 84M and compared it to a year old 3-9 Conquest that's on the 8400.

My back yard has an open space and then hardwoods after that. I did not expect to see much difference as I would need a good target out there.

The difference between the optics of the two scopes when each is set at 4X is dramatic. More tommorrow.

When you have time I would like to see the report. I have not ordered a scope yet as I pointed out in the other thread..

PS - nice back yard, looks like mmine but I have a cotton field between myself and the hardwoods.

I tell all of my clients who ask what type of optics to buy that I don't care as long as the name starts with an L.
It's true that there are a number of good to great optics out there - they are all improving- but Leupold offers the best warrantee in the business on top of the toughest optics. Period. I have had two Burris scopes fog in the past couple of years and all I ever got from them was a hard time when I told them.

I agree with all the Leupold comment's... for an 06 I'd use the 2x7 VXII... it's svelt, and wonderfully bright... about the same as the older VariXIII 2.5x8 and over $100 less...

Hello,
Product support and warranty are two important aspects of any purchase and the saying about Leuopold is that there is no such thing as a "used" Leupold. Warranty is as good as it gets.

I understand that the Zeiss provides a very bright, clear picture. That's nice.

The Leupold will have a much more forgiving eye placement "window" (both laterally and fore-and-aft, no matter what the manufacturer's "specs" say), which is vitally important in acquiring the sight picture. The Leupold will also be smaller and lighter. The Leupold has a smaller diameter on both ends, which allows you to mount it lower. Service, should it ever be needed, is a known factor with the Leupold and is somewhat "iffier" with the Zeiss.

There is a big difference in a good telescope and a functional optical gunsight. Leupold knows what is important in a gunsight and makes the optical and mechanical compromises necessary to make its telescope the most functional as a gunsight. Zeiss makes a really good telescope.

Zeiss has been making optical gunsights since LONG before Leupold ever did.

I think they know what they are doing when it comes to rifle scopes.

The ghost of Eremicus is with us!

That's not so about the eye placement or eye box or whatever buzz words "E" comes up with.

I shoot them both and the Zeiss is the much better scope. When you really need to make something out the Leupold is not the one to have. If it's a ordinary shot they are fine.

Not long ago Leupold announced they were changing the free transferable warrantee but that hit the fan and we got "fair pricing" instead.

That 2.5X-8X leupold is a great scope. I have not tried the Zeiss, but they have a good rep.
