I'll vote for tikka or Remington. Both likely to be extremely accurate out of the box. The tikka is really smooth. Open the bolt and tilt the gun slightly and the bolt slides like it's on ball brgs. The tikka is the Toyota Camry of guns--the Remington is the American built champ. (taurus/impala)??

< !--color--> Dave, It seems as though you want a rifle that sports a wood stock, I personally would get a Remington Stainless/Synthetic, and put a H-S Precision sporter stock on it to see what a real rifle feels like(instead of the Tupperware stock they put on them), adjust the trigger to 2lbs. and go shooting, that's what I did with my S/S 708, and just love it! If you want to stick with the wood, I'd go for the Win.

Also, is 22" a bit short for .30-06? Wouldn't a 24" barrel be more optimum/efficient?
22" is fine for a '06', another 2" will give less velocity than you think, maybe 20-30fps, if that.

I'm snake bit when it comes to Rugers

Beautiful rifles, but I never owned one that shot worth a damn. I bought a new RSI International in a .270win, it was loud as hell with the 17" barrel, grouped 3" @100yds was the best I could do with it. Completely unacceptable, so I traded it in on another MKII stainless laminated .243win. It grouped 4" @100yds! Never again, Never again

I've always had great luck with Winchester. I've heard horror stories about them too, but have never experinced any for myself. Give me a Mauser or a Classic and I'm happy

I've owned a few Remingtons. Nothing a matter with them, just nothing for me to get excited about. Most shoot straight and are reliable, It's just a matter of personal taste I guess. Mine doesn't lean that way.
