My brother is going to take this as a backup to a 300 win mag and I'll be using my 35 whelen. Shouldn't need it but you know things can happen on a trip. Elk will be the game. The rifle is a rechambered Remington 700 BDL. It was a 7mm rem. mag so it has a 24" barrel and a muzzle brake(gettin rid of that soon).What do ya think of the combo?

My personal feeling on the STW's is that they burn alot of of powder for very little extra bang. That opinion is based on the 140 and 150 grain bullets. However a pointy 175gr bullet at 3100fps in 7mm would have an extremely high ballistic co-efficient and sectional density. Mathematically obsessed shooters would drool over the stellar numbers this combination would produce, but a real life hunter's only concern would be that this combination would shoot really flat, hit really hard and penitrate like a meteor. So why is this gun back up?

raybass-that 175 Horn/STW combo is the combo my elk hunt bud has used to take a fair number of bulls.

It'll darn sure do the job as long as the shooter does his/her part.

It just hasn't proved itself yet. He just bought it. He's just now loading some ammo for it we'll shoot it tommorrow and check accuracy. Oh it's a lefty too! He's been shootin right hand gun's for years, which he is but an accident years ago to his right eye limited his vision in that eye. At any rate we'll try it and see. Thanks guy's

I haven't shot any elk with it but I know my 7mm Weatherby with Remington factory 175 grs soft points (basically the same as the STW) blew right through both shoulders of a hog.

I own two 7mmstws,and I have taken a half dozen elk with them.My choice of bullets would be the 140gr tsx.It will shoot flatter and penetrate better than the 175gr hornady.In fact it penetrates every bit as good as a 175gr partition.In most 26" barrels, the 140gr tsx can easily be driven to 3500fps.
