Lets see some checkering pictures.
I am haveing a second custom rifle made on a mauser action. I will be using a Turkish walnut blank. I'd like to see some pictures of the checkering that others have used. Just looking for ideas. Thanks!

Take a look at the checkering done by Gary Goudy on the Ottmar ACGG Rifle:

Is damned pretty work from the pics. Haven't seen the rifle yet ... but sure looking forward to it!

My model 70 .270. I like simple and not overly large patterns.

My favorite Deer, Antelope, and Sheep rifle. A .257 Ackley that I built in 1979. Mauser Mark X barreled action, Fajen fancy Claro Walnut stock. Brownell's checkering pattern No. 1.

My favorite African rifle. A Remington 700 SS in .375 Rem Ultra Mag that I put together in 2004. Stock is from Richards Microfit and I used the same Brownell's No. 1 checkering pattern as my .257 AI.

Can I come swim in your pool?

Is that the original Ruger stock?

The pool is open year round, just a little chilly from Nov to April just bring beer and jump in.

No that is a new stock. I cracked two factory stocks in a row at the tang. Then I had LeRoy Connie from Canyon Creek Custom Stocks in Montana build this stock for me. He also modified the recoil lug system and added the aft cross bolt.
LeRoy was refered to me from another member here on AR. He is a number one guy! I am going to have him stock my Ruger #1S in .338 Win Mag next.

458Lottfan,

Spear points and lions tails? I love it. Congrats on beautiful work.

Was that design your idea, or someone elses? Regardless, that's the most creative design I've seen.

I remember that Jack Belk said that the three oldest artforms are jewelry making, tatooing, and decorating one's weapon. I like two out of three of those. Tatoos aren't for me. I do like jewelry...on women. My art of choice is the craftsmanship exhibited on the likes of these fine rifles.

I need to lose a little more weight before I don a bathing suit.

I had the factory stock on my RSM .416 Rigby steel bedded, tang relieved and then recheckered at 22 LPI with a wider pattern. It was an improvement, but not nearly as nice as yours

This was my first custom rifle project. I had never even thought about checkering patterns before this. After looking around I knew I did not want a point pattern

I saw some examples with a ribbon of un-checkered wood passing through the pattern and a fleur-de-lis. I sent LeRoy a few photos of different African spear points and asked him to choose one that would fit the best to replace the fleur-de-lis and then leave the ribbon on it. It was LeRoy and his wife that added the lion’s tails.

Since lions hunt Cape Buff I thought this would be the perfect theme for my Buff rifle!

Neither I nor this rifle has been to Africa yet. My first trip will be plains game in Namibia this July. I have whacked a few prairie dogs and two coyotes with it though.

Where are you going in Namibia? I hope you're not going to shoot poor little springbok with that Lott!

Last year, I went to Namibia, followed by Zimbabwe. Both were great.
