BiebsAnyone play with the 338 Norma Mag?
A government-type ordered a custom chambered in this round for testing. I wasn't even aware of the caliber, but see it's listed on the Norma website under Ballistics. Looks like maybe a 338 Lapua clone?

j stoviakI have a 300/338 Norma mag improved and a 7mm/338 norma mag improved. The idea of the 338 Norma mag was a Shortened 338 Lapua with less taper to achieve the same or better velocity with 300 grain bullets, while Allowing loading in the 5 round detachable mags without the bullet taking up lots of powder space like the Lapua does. It does this and the improved version does it even better.

mstarlingI spent a day with the designer of the cartridge and had a wonderful discussion about it. Got to see his range logs and his rifles.
Lots of very interesting appreciation plaques on his personal wall from VERY interesting places.
Did a lot of reading thereafter.
Fascinating cartridge that simply delivers more energy at distance with less recoil and better ballistics than the .338 Lapua.

cal30 1906Never heard of this one is it new? My brother has the lapua and a .340 Weatherby and he says he actually prefers the .340 because he could not see much difference.
The less recoil appeals tp me because that .340 was not fun to work up a load for.

AtkinsonI have never seen much improvement over the .338 Win with any of them, and its a lot cheaper to run.
I had a 340 for awhile and I could not tell any difference in killing effect,at least in the field and I got more blast and much more recoil, but I'm not a 600 yard shooter either so I'm sure that may be the difference..I have never seen a animal at 600 yards that I could not cut that range in half..
I think these large .338s are probably the utimate in sniper rounds, and for those that want to shoot deer at outstanding ranges, but I am anti shooting game animals at extreme ranges as although some folks are probably excellent at it, but so many are not and those folks gut shoot, and blow legs off and you never hear about that as it gives the practice a black eye. I won't go into the practice as its legal and to each his own.
I am a hunter, and hunting is my game, shooting is the result of my skills as a hunter and the sniper generation will lose that skill, much like tracking is a lost art from lack of use and passing it on..
