Black FlyI've only put a couple rifles together, that being measurably less having custom rifle work done. It all dedpends on what you want and what you are going to put it on. Is it for pretty or hunting, is it for a heavy hitter, or a light groundhog rifle? There a number of other things that will play into what is best including your personal preferences, before some of our more experienced colleagues can give you good advice.

Cornerstone,
Dressels has their starting grade Circassian walnut blanks on sale for $60!!!
http://www.dressels.com/id52.htmThey also have higher grade stock blanks depending on your price range - From the link above just go back to their home page and follow links to rifles.
If your looking for fitted stocks Great American Gunsotcks can do anything from blanks to 96% fits to custom fits.

fredj338Range queen, working rifle, ligth caliber or magnum? I've bought from Dressel's, nice folks, good product. Go straighter grain for heavy kickers or working rifles that may see bad weather.

vapodogBest walnut is somewhat dependent on what caliber you're building.
For heavy kickers I'd use english or bastogne or Black.
Throw in glass bedding and stock bolts and you're home free.
Claro is also very pretty but considerablt less dense and should be reserved for lesser powered guns such as the 300 magnums and down.
My guess as to strength is like this:
English/French walnut
Bastogne/Turkish
Black
Claro
Maybe someone will post a different opinion.
