270 Win to 9.3x62?
May be better topic for gunsmithing, but so many knowledgeable people here...

I have a old, but very nice FN in 270 Win. Don't need or use this caliber, but the action is soooo smooth, and quite beautiful.

Can I have this action modified to take the 9.3x62? Will the magazine still work for the 9.3? I assume I will need to rebarrel?

thanks for your help.

In fact, the only reason in the world to buy or own a .270 is to convert it to a 9.3x62. Good move.

really? I am a bit ignorant, but the bolt head doesn't need to be changed? No other issues? Great!

Yup....just add a barrel and a box of ammo and go get your freezer filled.

I did exactly this on a lefty Winchester 70. I found the feed rails needed tweeking a little in order to get the Woodleigh round nose bullets to feed well, but some other bullets fed just fine without the mod.

This wasn't a big deal, but I'd always recommend making up some dummy rounds with various bullets you think you'll use, then getting the smith to test the rifle for feeding before it's finished. My smith tested with two kinds of factory ammo, but not the Woodleighs I ended up wanting to use. My fault, and lesson learned. Only took a little effort to get it sorted in the end.

The 9.3X62 doesn't need bolt work. The 9.3X64 does.

OK. How about a Rem ADL .30-06 conerted to a 9.3x62? Is all that's needed is just a barrel or does bolt work need to be done?

No rifle being converted from 30-06 to 9.3x62 should need any bolt work. As I detailed above, my Winchestzer 70 needed a little feed work to make a certain round nose bullet feed well. That's all.

To build a 9.3 on a Remington action is a felony.

Stu - Thanks. Therefore all I need is a 9.3x62 barrel? Thanks again.

That's not exactly what I said. I twice mentioned my Winchester 70 needed a bit of work done to get it to feed as well as I wanted. It wasn't hard, but it's a bit different to saying “all I need is a 9.3x62 barrelâ€. I might add I don’t do the work myself. That’s what gunsmiths are for. Smiler

Hope this clarifies things.
