While the 270 does have a longer case neck and thus case length, it shares the same datum as teh .30-06. In fact, the 30-06 Springfield, 25-06 Remington, 6.5mm-06, 270 Winchester, 8mm-06, 338-06, and 35 Whelen all use the same gage.
I have many rifles that shoot different cartidges based off of a similar parent case. Never had the misfortune of inserting the wrong cartidge into a rifle. Trying to use properly headstamped cases helps, as does only having one type of ammo out at a time. Properly marking/labelling wildcat cartidges helps too.
