340WbyActions used in 'latest' 'standard' Mauser M98 offering???
I'm considering a Mauser M98 in 9.3x62 for the future. I just need to get some info regarding these rifles.
http://www.mauserwaffen.de/M-98.64.0.html?&L=1Which 'make' of 'action' is used on the 'standard'(22-250 Rem. – 9,3x64)???
Any out there using one, had dealings with or handled one for that matter.
Just like to get some of your opinions.
Cheers

I'll give this a stab.....the action length on the Mauser M03's (Mini & Standard) is the same for the entire cartridge line-up from 22-250 thru 9.3x62. M03's are a modified, push-feed (Herr Mauser's gonna roll-over in his grave; if he hasn't already) type M98 action with a cocking lever/button/switch (for lack of a better description) on the bolt-shroud. No, it's not what is referred to a "Classic" Mauser controlled-feed action. They are a switch barrel and bolt head design to accomodate various chamberings within a specific range. The 22-250 Remington-9.3x62 (standard action) will accept the Mini (.222 & .223 Remington) bolt heads, barrels AND the .22-250 thru 9.3x62 barrels. Upward mobility to the Magnum length action, barrels & bolt heads requires a Magnum rifle (magnum-length action).
While not overwhelmingly abundant here in The Fatherland (or Europe in general), I've seen several at the ranges and in the field and they are very well made, good-looking rifles with a range of model options that features (the current rage) of being able to chamber a round without the rifle being cocked (therefore no safety only the cocking/de-cocking lever). Operating the action and cartridge chambering (since there is little resistance) is quite smooth.
I had a Left-Handed M03 in 9.3x62 in my grubby mitts several weeks ago and the impression was positive. I imagine like pretty much anything else you get familiar after a while is the cocking lever on this piece of equipment. IMO the cocking mechanism probably has a pretty steep learning curve if you're not used to such at the moment of truth.

MFDHello,
If you are referring to the importer of Mauser M98's, they are located in San Antonio, TX and the no. is 210 377 2527. Believe a quick call and they could advise on your question.

340WbyI think I heard somewhere that Mauser use Prechtl actions

wildcat junkieWTF is this?
quote:
M 03 BASIC MODELL
Mauser safety system for manual cocking
Current safety requirements stipulate that hunting rifles must be carried uncocked. The M 03 is cocked manually just before firing. This is easily done in the firing position.
Cocking the rifle: Move the cocking lever to the right, into the "Fire" position.
Where are these "current safety requirements" in effect?

Gerry340Wby,

The Muaser 98 CRF Magnum Length Double Square Bridge actions on their website are for their DGR Series only.
I'm certainly willing to be enlightened, have possibily been mis-informed or failed to read the fine print BUT from the literature, brochures, advertising and rifles I've seen here; the DGR Series does not include the 9.3x62 chambering. The DGR Series starts with belted magnums in the M98 Magnum action.

The remainder of Mauser's current wares including the "standard" action referred to in your query above in the .22-250-9.3x62 catridge range are made on the M03 action; Push Feed, Barrel & Bolt Head switch Models.
I cannot confirm that Mauser is using Prechtl actions. On the other hand; I do not know of someone else who currently producing Mauser CRF Magnum Length Double Sqaure Bridge actions here in The Fatherland.
Prechtl's shop is @ 45 minutes south of here and a great place to visit - I take full advantage of the proximity.

If you are considering an original Mauser M98 CRF action (rifle) chambered in 9.3x62 you'll have to used an original action, not their current production M03's.

wildcat-j,

I'm with you. there are no such "current safety requirements" here in The Fatherland or other european countries that I'm aware of.
My personal take-away; although pure speculation, is that similar to many businesses today Mauser has used a translation service who has not done an adequate translation job.

On this page it appears that the M98 action (not the M03 in this case) is indeed available in 22-250 through 9.3X 62.

I'm really just a nice Guy who's just trying to help out here - nothing more, nothing less.....

I understand completely what you fellows are attempting to get at. Mauser's current production rifles are no longer made in a M98 Controled Round Feed action other than the DRG Series (Magnum Length Mauser Controlled Feed Double Square Bridge - where they source them I do not know but it's most likely Prechtl). Please read the fine print - here a copy & paste from the M98 you are referring to:
quote:
M 98 BASIC MODEL
Action
with 3 lugs and double square bridge
This rifle is a modified M98 made from Mauser's current M03 production; Push Feed, with a 3-position safety shroud, on the 3 lug M03 action.
Don't mis-understand me, I'm not a "I Gotta Be Right Kinda Guy". I recently spent an hour in Mauser's Booth on 5 September 2009, at the German Shooting Championships discusing this exact query with Mauser Representatives. Unless Mauser has changed their production line-up in 6 weeks.....well, O.K., please show me the True Path and I'll be happy to admit very publically that I'm mis-informed.

Thank you Sir for that info.
It seems that Mauser has not updated their website, so the reason for the confusion.
Thanks again

Tsquare2You might wish to look at the Granite Mountain Arms action as well. It is quite similar to the Prechtl action, but made here in the USA. Tom

RobertHello 340Wby
The Mauser M98 models currently offered by Mauser booth in standard & magnum length, use Prechtel actions. They are still available.
If you need more details send me a PM.

SGButtonWhen Mauser states "3 lug" when talking about the standerd M98, two lugs up frount 1 lug in the rear (safety lug). The set-up is the same as any 98 made in the past.
