mannlicher rifle and cartridges
Guys,

Wondering which of the standard length carts will work in a mannlicher styled rifle with the appropriately short barrel; which of the x57 cases or other would work?

Thanks!

Are you talking about an original Mannlicher-Schoenauer with the rotary magazine? If so, which model?

no, a mannlicher stocked rifle and the accompanying 20 inch barrel or so. wondering if one cartridge is more efficient than another. 6.5, 7x57, 8x57?

You can see 7x57 and 8x57 (8x56 MS) in short barreled Mannlicher Schönauer carabines so I think both of them goes well. IMO 6,5x57 is better with longer barrel.

With a short barrel, the larger the bore, the more efficeint the powder burns.

I have a CZ550 FS in 7x64 that burns IMR4350 very efficiently, with a 20 inch barrel.

I had a Ruger in .30-06 with the 18.5" barrel and didn't like it, so I switched to a .308.

Nothing wrong with the 6.5x55, 6.5x57, 7x57, or 8x57, but in a 20" barrel I really like the 9x57 or 9,3x57.

I have 7x57's and 8x57's with 20" barrels and none are handicapped. Pick the one that you think will be most versatile for your hunting needs and have fun.

Thanks, all. BTW, does anyone know if the interarms barrels on say the 30 06 are the same profile as the 7x57 or 270 or 280?

The Mk X .30-06 and .270 barrels I have on hand are identical. The last 7x57 I worked on looked the same to me.

you can build a manlicher on any caliber or actions..a 20 inch tube will lose roughly 100 FPS and that makes -0- difference in killing power..proper bullet placement does.

I have found the .270 with a 20 inch tube loses less FPS than any of the cartridges that I have tried. The 7x57 seems to handle short tubes well. The big bores kill with bullet mass, cross section of bullet etc. so short tubes work well with them also..

The only minus I see with a 20 inch barrel is if they are too light and won't settle down on a jump shot..so I usually make my carbines on at least a no. 3 barrel. and keep them a tad muzzle heavy, trying to obtain the same balance that I get from a 26 inch barrel.
