What speeds are you getting from your 20" barrels on 9.3x62 with 286 gr bullets?

Austin HunterWhat speeds are you getting from your 20" barrels on 9.3x62 with 286 gr bullets?
I'm thinking of doing a 9.3x62 20" Mannlicher.
Can I get 2,360 fps at reasonable pressures with a 20" barrel and 286 gr bullets? (going to try PPSN Woodleighs and the new Aframe).
Thanks!

metricYes you can!
By using Norma 203b or Vitha N140 or N150
I used a stiff load of 60grs N140 behind a 286grs Lapua Mega in a 21-inch M98. Got 2440 to 2480 fps with no pressure signs

NakihunterYes. Varget will get you there as well. Very uniform velocities in my rifle & very accurate.

Nordic2203b and rl17 is very similar made by the same factory.

Texas KillartistNordic2, I was under the belief that 203B and RL 15 were the same.
I gleaned that info from this site.
Am I mistaken ?

AtkinsonI have a 9.3x62 custom with a 24 inch barel and a 20 inch 9.3x62..I am going to start over, using both rifles with RL-17, and make comparisons and will work up max loads that will work in both rifles using 286 gr. Noslers and 300 gr. Swifts..Hopefully these guns that show a tendency to group all weights together will continue to do so and shoot both 250 gr. GS Customs and 320 gr. Woodleighs to the same POI..Anyway that's the plan..
I have used H414 and RL-15 in the past and that has been my choice of powder..I am firmly convienced as of now that RL-17 will be the better powder, but school is still out on that.
It may be a week or two before we get some at least shootable weather, I can shoot from my shop so that helps but 20 degree weather plays hobb with the chronograph and everything else in Idaho, including us'ens..

.458 OnlyRL-17 and Varget are NOT similar. RL-17 is a LOT slower!
Varget compares to RL-15, which is considerably faster than RL-17 which compares to IMR4350.

900 SSLike Texas Killartist, I think 203b is similar to Rl-15 not Rl-17.

Alberta CanuckI have no knowledge of 203-B whatsoever, but I always found the original N203 to be very similar to both Gevelot RP-3 and IMR or H-4895 in my rifles.

Austin HunterHere's what I decided.
The basis for the rifle is a Husqvarna M98 9.3x57 w/24" barrrel. It already has a nice light profile barrel with front and rear sights and a barrel band.
1. I'm going to check the condition of the barrel as a 9.3x57. I have another 9.3x57, so I have lots of hand loads for that rifle to shoot.
2. If it shoots well, I'll rechambered to 9.3x62 and keep the 24" barrrel, no Mannlicher.
3. If it's a turd, I'm going to see if some of slight erosion in the throat barrel can be cleaned up with the rechamber or even setting the barrel back a bit. If not, it will get a 20" #2 Douglas barrel and then I'll duplicate one of the two Mannlicher stocks I have for my 8x57 (I might even just use the synthetic one of it fits and be done for while).

SnellstromSounds like a great way to justify a project!
I am truly amazed at how many AR members shoot, hunt and load for obscure cartridges.
I have some oddballs including a 9.3x62 and must admit locally nobody knows what it is.
Have fun with yours.

D HumbargerI called Alliant powders several years ago to obtain RL17 load data.
The engineer I spoke with told me to use load data for IMR 4305.
He explained that the burn rate was essentially the same there i would
be safe useing IMR 4350 data. RL 17 is made in Switzerland for Alliant
Alliant gave the Swiss firm the perameters for the new powder
they wanted, high velocities acceptable pressure. I use RL17 in my 284
and get velocitie that I KNOW that I shouldn't be getting with NO
pressure signs. I am going to try it in my 338/06 next.

AtkinsonMost of this thread is answered in my testing of RL-17 in the thread that Colorado Matt refers to in the above posts on AR, along with some good information by others on the subject..
Guess its time for me to challenge RL-19 and RL-22 against my reserve of RL-17 in the 338-06 I just acquired..It will really have to shine to beat those two great powders, we will see..Now to find a starting load..

Hell Snell, I know what it is! I've probably brought more odd ball cartridges to your range than you have.

AtkinsonAs far as killing effect or killing power its damn hard to tell the difference in a 26 or 20 inch barrel on any of the game Ive shot and that includes Buffalo...What I do believe is the additional velocity of the 26 inch tube is about 100 FPS and that's not much but in my observation, correct or not, I got the impression that the 9.3 320 gr. Woodleigh worked much better in the 26 inch barrel with that little amount of velocity..but I would just use the Swift 300 gr. and be done with it on DG with any 93..
