Howdy Gents,

I saw a Parker Hale rifle that looks pretty nice. It has British proof marks on the barrel I think, but I was wondering about the action. Where were these made? It does not have the thumbcut, does have the side safety, regular Mauser bolt release.

Thanks!

Good rifles IMO. I have a 1200 in .270 and another but don't know the model in .243 Win. Both are on commercial Mauser 98 actions. Paid $150 for the .243 when I was 18 and $300 for the other when I was 30, some of the best money I ever spent.

My .243 says it was made in Midland England, but it isn't the Midland model based off of the 1903 Action. IIRC since I don't have it infront of me the .270 is from Birmingham England. I figure both actions are Santa Barbara Mausers.

The only thing I don't care for on Either rifles are the Weatherby style stocks and the basket weave checkering on the .270. Other than that they are the rifles I've killed the most game with in my collection. Pretty solid hunting rifles, and if the right deal came along I'd buy another.

Psmith The Parker Hale rifle you talked about sounds like one of the later models. The early models were made on military 98 actions and have the thumb slot on the left side of the action. When they ran out of good military actions they used some flat topped Brno actions for a very short time. They then went to the Santa Barbra mauser. They do not have the thumb slot, they do have the slide safety on the right side and some had hindged floorplates while others had detachable clip magazines. Some were not polished as much as they could have been but most were quite good.

Does it have integral scope mounts?

That sounds like a good old Parker Hale; a Santa Barbara mauser based gun(actually made in the same plant as Santa Barbara's, identical). The worst thing aboput these are the pot metal trigger housings, and they are not that bad either.

Forrest Only the flat topped Brnos had the intergal scope mounts.

A Mauser I barreled with a .30 Parker Hale barrel turned out to be the most accurate .30/06 I ever owned. I wish I would have bought 10 of them when I had the chance.
