What are you hunting with this year?

I've asked this question about this time the last few years. I like to hear about what people are hunting and what they are using. Pics welcomed.

I'm hunting deer, hogs, coyotes. This year I'm trying an MSR. I'm using a new AR in 6.8 SPC. Still working out the load but most likely will use the 120 Hornady SST.

No need for ammunition, just show that to the animals and they'll collapse, either from fright or amusement. But I believe a person should hunt with whatever tool he chooses, regardless of how ridiculous and impractical it might appear.

I'll start the season for CO elk with a well-used Sako L61R .300 H&H shooting 180 Accubonds at just under 3,000 fps. It is topped with a Leupold VX-III 3.5-10X40 with B&C reticle. Checked it last week and holding dead on with the 300 yard crosshatch put the bullet dead on the center of the target.

Next will go to S.Texas for whitetails with a Sako .25-06 I restocked with a rare factory LH stock that shoots 117 Nosler Ballistic Tips at 3125 fps into incredibly small groups out to 300 yards. It is equipped with a Leupold Limited Edition (2007) Century model VX-II 3-9x40 with the hold-over dots on the lower post. Not quite as good a reticle as the B&C in my opinion, but very effective.

Later in the Texas whitetail season I'll take my Sako .280 Rem to N. Texas loaded with the old original Nosler 150 Solid Base bullets to 3040 fps. It shoots groups rivaling the .25-06 and will be very effective on some of the large feral hogs sometimes seen there. It is mounted with a Leupold Century identical to the .25-06.

It will depend on my mood that day or the situation I will be hunting in.

I haven't killed anything with my 1907 Win. S.L. .351 in a couple of years, may take that out for some does.

I'm gonna mix things up this year. Took my Blaser R8 to Africa, in .375 and .458 Lott. In Colorado, I will use my Chapuis in 9.3 x 74R for Bear, my newly rebarreled .257 Roberts for deer and probably my Blaser in .300 WM for elk

I have a September Bear tag and I'll probably carry my Win M70 Supergrade .338 Win mag that I used in South Africa a couple months ago. It shoots 225 Sierras at 2850 fps very well.
I may use it for Elk season as well because I've never killed an Elk with it.
Probably use my 257 Roberts on 4th season Mule Deer. It's a Husky M96 that shoots 117 Sierras into tiny groups and drops Muleys like a lightning bolt. Oklahoma whitetails I haven't picked a rifle yet, maybe AR 15 or M70 Super grade in 22/250 or a 6.5 Swede that is Un hunted so far....

I'm totally crushed. I was looking forward to trying an AR for hunting. Now all the joy and anticipation has been sucked out of me. Thanks for ruining my season.

Scott, screw 'em all! I'm heading to Alaska for Moose on Sept 7th. We sit up on a knoll and overlook thousands of acres of tundra and willow. I'm bringing a Blaser LRS2 in 338 Rem Ultramag shooting 225gr Accubonds at 3,150 fps....extend the range a bit :-)

9.3 X 75R

I'm gonna use several for deer and hogs. These aren't counting what used to be muzzleloading season.
9 X 57 Sauer & Sohn Mauser

Thieme & Schlegelmilch drilling in 16 x 16 over 9.3 X 75R

Sometime my 9 X 71 Peterlongo will see some woods time

During the course of the seasons I'll also carry a Jost & Diehl combination gun in 16 X 10.5 X 47R, a 1903 Mannlicher/Schoenauer in the classic 6.5 X 54 and my Goldmann German double rifle in 11.15 X 60R will have to accompany me on at least one hunt. Then as a previous poster said, "whatever I grab".

This past March, I took my .300 Weatherby Vanguard with 168 gr TTSXs to New Zealand for Red deer, Fallow, Tahr, and an Arapawa ram.

I have an Elk tag, but because my freezers are still full of my last two bulls, the .300 Bee won't go elk hunting, but I may try to fill my Wolf tag with it and a 168 gr Hornady.

I'll probably use my .257 Ackley with a 115 gr Ballistic tip to fill my Montana Mule or Whitetail deer tag.

The only other tag that I have is for Montana Mountain Lion. I should get serious about filling that tag this year, and to do that I'll probably carry my 6" S&W Model 66 .357 mag with a Hornady 158 gr HP/XTP bullet.

Same for me. I gave my buddy grief all the time. I always hunted with a bolt and I have 8 big game bolt guns in various calibers both wood and synthetic stocks. I was really shocked just how accurate a well built AR can be. A 120 SST at 2450 fps should be fine for what I'm hunting at the distances I'm likely to shoot. Still love my bolt actions just looking to switch it up this year.

It certainly is a far cry from what one would call elegant. It's all a matter of taste and there is no accounting for taste. I expect that thing will shoot the eye out of a fly at great distance...it certainly looks as if it could..... but I wouldn't be caught dead with it in my house....let alone in the field.

Whitetail for me this year, will ether use my 1974 Rem 700 bdl 7mm rem mag with 160 grain nos accubond or my new Winchester mod 70 feather weight grade III in 30-06 with 150 nos balistic tips. I might also drag out my 2011 production Winchester mod 71 348 win loaded with 200 grain flex tips.

Will start off with antelope and, being left-handed, use a Rem 700 LH rebarreled to .25-06. After that, mule deer with another Rem LH, but the short action, in the wildcat 6.5WSM. Elk is next using the same stock and action as used for mule deer, but switching the barrel to .338WSM. For whitetail in Oklahoma on a friend's property, its all conventional. A Browning left-hand X-Bolt in .243. Scopes are various Leupolds on all the rifles.

If I shoot a deer, it will be because someone else wants it. Past several years I have used my Win 70 in .243 with 100 grain Win bulk packed bullets. I have taken several youngsters out that used .222 or .223 with 55 grain Remington or Winchester bulk packed bullets. This has generated several threads with some heated arguments. So, if I do shoot a deer it will either be my .222 in Rem 600 or my .223 in Win mod 70. Can't miss a chance to flame with Kabluewy and a few others.

I think for deer it will be my #1A in 7x57 With a vx2 2x7 140 grain Ballistic tips at 2900 and .75 inches.
And for elk my stainless hawkeye .338 win Vx3 3.5x10. Moa with 225 grain acubonds...

Much that I love my Merkel K1 in 7mm RMag...it might be a tad overkill on Texas whitetails.

So...the only logical answer left is my 141 in 9.3x74r.

I'm still playing with loads but the first load was very promising with a 286gr. H-IL over 58.0 of BigGame delivering 2,250 fps. Nice, mild thumper that should do the job nicely.

Hogs with my Blaser R8 in 6.5x55, and Montana deer with the Blaser in 300 Weatherby.

I can push 168 grain TTSX's at obscene velocities and love very minute of it with the 300 and still shoot ragged holes.

I took a SoDak deer last year with my 6.8 in a Rock River based Ar. 115 grain Remington Ultra Bonded absolutely played hell with heart and lungs before leaving the off shoulder. I was very impressed. This year my niece will be using that gun here at home and it will be the 6.5-06, 240Wby, and 270 Win depending on the day and the hunt. The boys will be shooting 243, 30-06, and 260 and the daughter is still shooting the 300Roy.

I am having fun using my grandparents and parents rifles so I can say they have killed a deer within the last 50 yrs.
So far I have used dad's Marlin 30/30 and Krag 30/40 Krag. Grandfather's Savage 99 in 300 Savage. I have a Win. 73 in 38/40, a Rem. 742 in 280 Rem., mom's Sako delux in 222 Mag. to go and then I will be done with that dream.
Then it is back to my old Rem.721 in ought six, my Mod. 70 Classic Ftwt. in 243, my Browning BLR in 7/08 or my Wm. Jeffery in 6.5x54 MS.
We will have over 100 deer to take off the ranch most likely so it is bring what you picked up and keep shooting! It has taken 8 yrs. of game management to get the ranch to a one to one ratio.
The cooler will only hold 16 deer at a time.
