metric rifle cartridges for game around the world
I know that the topic of "Five Cartridges For Hunting the World's Game" is discussed every year by just about every major gun magazine, but this one has a twist. What five (or less) European-designed metric cartridges would you choose for hunting around the world? The game would range in size from varmints to dangerous game. The cartridges can even be obsolete or out of date. This is only hypothetical and only for fun. Here's my list:

5.6x50
7x64
8x68
9.3x64
10.75x73

I'd probably go with the 5.56x45 for varmints, the 7.62x51 or 7.62x63 for general game, the 9x63 for bigger game. For Africa, I agree with the 10.75x75.

Honestly sir, I am fond of the following old military cartridges:

8x57

I don't hunt varmints so I would be able to do quite nicely with a 7x64 and a 9.3x64.

9.3x62

or if you are into doubles (Like I am):

5.6x52R
6.5x57R
8x57IRS
9.3x74R

Got two already - need/want the others.

Should not have looked at this as it's too much fun - Gets me to start searching for them again. There goes the gun funds.

I too, am a big fan of the 7X57 and the 9.3X64. I also like to play with the 9X57. Trouble is my 7X57 says 275 Rigby on it and my 9X57 says 9mm Mauser on its barrel. Smiler

I might add that the only rifle I have that shoots 9.3X64 cases right now actually uses 375 bullets in it. Wink

  • reaching out a little; 6.5X54
  • Anything in the lower 48: 7X57
  • For even some of the game that'll bite you 8mm-06.

    I also enjoy using an 8x60s. It is as versatile as the .30-06.

    The 7x57, while designed in Europe, was never a popular hunting cartridge there. It was quickly outclassed by the 7x64, which has been Europe's premier smallbore since about 1918. The 7x57 was mainly exported to Africa and South America as a military cartridge, a designation which makes it illegal in several European countries. The 6.5x55 suffered a similar fate.
