RPWwinchester power point question
Hi guys. I got a bunch of 180 gn power points laying around that I want to load up for my 3006. How is the on game performance with these? Do you guys find they mushroom well in thin skin game such as whitetail? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

eliscominI used 150 grain power points in a .308 at around 2800 fps for years on Tennessee whitetail, and they were very effective. Deer almost always dropped immediately or at least before they got out of sight. Virtually all shots were complete pass throughs, but exit holes indicated good expansion. I expect the 180s out of your 06 will perform in a similar fashion.

Paul ReedDon't push them too fast and they will work just fine. They have been around forever and hard to argue with their success.
Good luck,

SonicI recently traveled to Canuckistan and shot a nice, 8-point whitetail with 180-grain Winchester Power Point factory loads. The range was about 70 yards and he was quartering towards me. One shot flopped him right on the spot; DRT as they say. An autopsy showed that the bullet entered the chest cavity just behind the right shoulder, caused massive damage, and extited the short ribs on the other side. I'd use those Power Point bullets again in a heartbeat.

WstrnhuntrI was reading some reviews on bullets yesterday reguarding bullets that were particuarly designed for the 257 Weatherby and 25-06. lead core, but very tough jacket made to work in a high velocity window. Some folks were using them on light skinned animals with lesser chamberings and complaining that they passed right through on lung shots not leaving enough of a blood trail.. that is a classic case of failing to match the bullet with the cartridge. Winchester probably had the 30-06 in mind when they made your PP's!!
The 06 and 180 gn power points are like peas an carrots, it dont get much better than that..

Dan HI've had good performance from both the basic Winchester PP and the Winchester Silvertip in 180g from the 30-06.
Cheers,
