Rifle Finish
I am building a custom hunting rig, Winchester Action, McMillan Stock, Lilja Barrel, Custom Bases, action work, the whole nine yards really.

The gun is stainless and was thinking about either getting it Duracoated, Ceracoated, Gun Coat, etc. As while I like Stainless in a hunting gun I like a Matte Finish more.

What do you like best for a Hard Matte Finish?

I know everyone has there own preferences, but was just wondering opinions.

Thanks in Advance.

Any referrals for finishing would be appreciated also.

Mink and Wall Tents don't go together. Especially when you are sleeping in the Wall Tent.

I've got several that are Cerrakoated, I think the spelling and process vary a bit, but basically it's a baked on epoxy style finish. IME, and I'm not real easy on a rifle in the field, this finish is very durable, and looks good too, a real deep, flat, black.

I've got a friend that has one that was 'film dipped' in one of the major camo patterns, Mossy something I think, and it has proved real durable as well, he had all the metal done, and the stock is flat black, it looks pretty cool, and he says it has been very durable, no nicks or anything yet.

An interesting note, I have had a bunch of rifles done, and when looking to put the Cerrakoating on a couple of my Sauers, the tolerances were too tight, the additional thickness of the Cerrakoating wouldn't fit and allow function---pretty cool testimony of the fit and finish of a Sauer to me--- I had them Rust Blued, which isn't an option on your stainless rig, but damn is that beautiful!

Good Luck

To what purpose is coating a SS for ?. Bead blast for a matte finish .
Film dip is called " Dura Coat ".SS may also be blued .
Have a look see for your self .

If you "finish" the exterior for appearance issues you will only create dissatisfaction for yourself as the finish will wear. The stainless, especialy when matte or bead blasted is very easy to touch up if necessary.

Like above. In the end it's all just paint and it's going to wear out. I'd leave it alone.

Well, other than that Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?

BLACK T is NOT paint.
It does not "wear" out.

Go to the link below, you may learn something, I did.

Dura-Kote is applied with an airbrush and is not "film dipped".

I would go with the SS beadblast...Most of those finishes will chip or wear with hard use, and they tend to scratch easily...Those that claim otherwise probably don't use them as hard as we do...I still like the old rust blue, but it is a costly finish and won't work on SS.....

I couldn't agree more Ray !. thumb

Short of flame sprayed or vacuum vapor deposited metal treatments , the rest are just window dressing and work real well if left in the display window . They almost never wear out !.

Most any coating which can be applied by the do it yourself method is no match for commercial application specialist . Epoxy , Urethane , Enamel , Phosphate , Teflon or other wise .

P S ; Dura coat as well as several other coating methods may be sprayed , dipped , brushed or converted to floating film coatings . FYI .
