Depends on the action.

Post it in the "gunsmithing" section. You are sure to get a good answer there. I am interested in the same question.

Yes the barrel can be reamed but most likely it will become a single shot due to cartridge/magazine length. Another probablity is the action feed rails will need to be modified (opened up) due to the different diameters of the cases.

Actions like the Sako L61R or AV, or Remington 700 have magazines that are long enough for the RUM series. Feed rails may need to be slightly modified for the fatter cartridge. The bolt face needs no modification. A Browning A-bolt should merely need a longer replacement detachable magazine. Generally speaking, the Ruger 77 and Winchester 70 have magazines that are too short and will require more detailed work to convert.

Thanks all for being so helpful.
The action is a Mod 70 CRF.. Sound like more work that it is worth??
Who would do this for me??
Guess on cost??

MADDOG,

I converted my Win Model 70 which was chambered in 7mm Remington Mag to a 338 R.U.M. and it was no big deal. It also feeds smooth as well.

THey need to put a longer magazine box and follower in and open up the ejection port and move back the bolt stop, all stuff that a good smith should be able to do. The 338 RUM is an awsome round that deserves more popularity than it gets.

I'll agree with the comments on the RUM. Great cartridge, lots of potential. Try and make the rifle weigh a decent amount, ie 9+ lbs. I have a Rem. 700 LSS in this caliber, and it is a little over 8.5 lbs all up. It kicks worse than my .458 WM.

Barrel can be reamed, and it will fit in model 70. Just get a decent smith, though - they are harder to find then one would think. I have heard alot of bullshit from my local dude....
