Oberndorf Mauser 9x57

One of the rifles on my bucket list, that I’ve yet to cross off, is an Oberndorf Type M with inside guard bow release in 9x57. I’ve wanted one for about 25 years now. In the mid 90’s I ran across a MS carbine in 9x56MS in a gun shop. Those are sweet too, but I prefer Oberndorf’s. I'm now leaning toward a reproduction in 9.3x62 now, but if I ever find an affordable inside bow release Type M 9x57, I would find a way!

I'm guessing the 57R may have been loaded to a lower pressure than the rimless, but I took some sort of amalgum of 356 win, 358 win and 9x57 loads from a Speer manual and Cartridges of the World and came up with a decent load. I used soft 250gr Hawk bullets. Brass came from necked up 8x57R using a Whelen expander ball.

Used it to take an antelope, a cow elk and a few deer. As you can imagine with its pedestrian speed and soft bullets, nothing came out the other side, but nothing walked more than a step.

You are REQUIRED to post pics of that awesome rifle with dead critters with fall!! Congratulations.

I will probably use Kynoch ammo this fall, will at least take it out for elk on opening weekend. I will definitely check out the Hawk bullets when I start reloading it. I sure hope to have it star in some dead critter pictures!

Just an FYI: the first box of older (probably '50s vintage) KYNOCH ammunition that I ran through my 9x57 worked perfectly, but a round from the 2nd box suffered a longitudinal body split just above the solid head. The result was a face full of gas and some pits in my glasses. I won't shoot such ammo now, but if you wish to, make sure that you have your glasses on!

Its a good idea IMO to be sure these rifles are mod. 98s and not 96s, as both were easily available sometime ago...Also I got a few in 9.3x62, loved those babies..Ihad a bunch of factory brass and some bullets for your rifle at one time, but think I sold that stuff, I'll look and see..

Finally got my hands on this rifle and I’m very happy with it. Bore is a little rough but should clean up fine.

My father shot several tigers, leopard, bison etc with a 9x57. His was a Type S Oberndorf carbine. After he passed away. We sold it as ammo also was not available in India for it in those days. Wish we had kept it as it was his favorite rifle.
