Length of barrel?
On a .300 Win Mag what is the performace difference in a 24" to a 26" barrel?

as much as 100fps with heavier bullets.

Harold I've done a fair amount of work in clocking tubes at one length and then cutting them and re clocking them.

According to my studies if you cut your tube from 26 to 24 you will lose between 60-66 fps totally.

No a big a deal, I'd cut it to 23" and get on with it.

Good luck

All my 270s have 24in barrels, all my magnums have 26in barrels. Get a 26in in your 300 win.

There is more involved than just barrel length but I don't know what the other variables are. I have 20" 7mm08 that shoots the same speed as my 24" 7mm08. I am not going to lose any sleep over the why but there are other variables.

Hello Harold,

Approximately 30 fps per inch. It's not a linear computation.

I'd far rather bet on 50'/sec difference than 100.

IMO the advantages of the shorter barrel are totally worth the small loss.

However.....we all see it differently.

Would go with a 30-inch barrel.

Makes a better walking stick and something to lean on when pictures are made.

The muzzle blast is two inches farther from your face...

as much as 100fps with heavier bullets, or maybe no difference at all.

The powder your cart. burns, the more bbl. it needs. You might see only 25fps/inch from a 06 but a 30mag, I'll bet it's closer to 50fps/inch.

In a given barrel 26" will be faster than 24" for that barrel alone.

Get whichever you feel more confident in.

Good Luck
