BigBulletRe: 35 Whelen and Heavy Bullets
Heres the follow up to the heavy bullet loads for my 35 Whelen, which is a 1903 Springfield action, with 22" Shilen barrel. All loads used RP cases, CCI-200 primers and were loaded to 3.335" COL.
300 grain Barnes Origionals Roundnose Softpoint.
58.0 grains IMR 4350 - 2075 fps 0.75" three shot group.
60.0 grains IMR 4350 - 2130 fps 0.64" three shot group.
275 grain Hornady RN SP; 60.0 grains IMR 4350 - 2170 fps, 1.2" three shot group.
The very wonderful thing about the 58.0 I4350/300 gr load is that it hit the same point of aim as the 225 grain Barnes X at 2625 fps. I think I will use it as a black bear thumper up in Minnisota this fall.

StrawbossBigbullet, those pills are way too heavy and slow for a Whelen. I'm thinking you're better off with 250 grainers max. Now I've got a .35 Newton being built that needs some heavy .358 bullets when you decide to get rid of them, ha, ha. Seriously, congratulations on getting such accurate loads developed. What is the twist rate on your barrel? I've ordered a 12 twist just to get the long bullets to shoot well.

BigBulletStrawboss,
The barrel on my rifle is 1:14 twist rate. I believe that you will do very well with the 1:12 twist and the heavy bullets (if you can find some)especially at the higher velocities. 35 Newton, now theres something you don't see everyday. Sounds like a great project! What action are you using for your project? You have me thinking now, I have an 1917 Enfield thats in 300 Win Mag now and I have a 35 Caliber barrel blank. You'll have to give details as you get further along.
Concerning bullet stabilization, I read where a 1:16 in 35 Whelen was good at the 100 yards, but at 200, the bullets started to show yaw on the target. This was written by Ken Waters in the first installment on the 35 Whelen. So I beleive its probibly true. For black bears up close though, I believe it will work

MartinPottsHay that the same action i made my sec 9.3x64 on
even though i can only shoot a max weight of 290 grain bullet's in it seems to work fine
