I have both, and in the same size action (so you can sit the bullets out) and barrel length, I find the 350 has a bit more speed. Might just be my personal rifles though. I get 2650 fps in the 350 with 250 gr bullets, and 2550 with the same bullets in the Whelen. FWIW - Dan

Another vote for the .350RemMag. I sold mine a number of years ago and have taken a bunch of game with a .338 but by this fall, Ill be packin' another .350RemMag. Just a fun round in small, handy rifles.

I'll take the 35 Whelen. I get around 2650 with 250's in my long throated Whelen. Hits like a sledgehammer out to 300 yds.

IMHO most versitle rifle I own.

I think I'll sneak in under the wire and say "9.3x64". As it has a diameter of only .366, it is apparently a medium bore, although there is nothing boring about it! Aha! One more advantage it has over the .375 Ouch& Ouch!

35 whelen right just doesn't have the case cap. to come close. I like my 338 06 but you can not put enough powder in the 06 case to complete.

338-06 AI 40deg....It does everything a 338WM factory load does, with less recoil. Same ballistics as a 35 Whelan with better terminal performace. But I'm just splitting hairs.

For North America (the only place I hunt), I'd have to go with the .300 Win Mag if limited to one rifle.

If I could have two rifles, I'd go with the .264 Win Mag, and the .338 Win Mag.

Fortunately, I have all three.

I know that the 6.5 mm doesn't qualify for the "medium bores according to the guidelines laid out here, but I've always thought of the "small bores" being quarter bores and below.

OK, I'll bite: I haven't hunted or used medium bores extensively (yet), but currently on my Mauser projects list are an 8mm-06 AI, and a 338-06 AI, along with a plain sporterizing a plain ol' 8mm Mauser. Since them's the object of me desires, I'll vote them as the best...for now....

I have and have had a number .338 Winchesters and think of them as the classic and versitile medium bore. But a friend has a wildcat .338 on an 8mm Remington case that is in every way very impressive. If I didn't already have a potload of .338 brass, I'd rechamber.

While I have and love a 338 UltraMag, I'm not married to that case. So lets just say anything that will hurl a .338" diameter, 250 grain bullet at 2900+f.p.s.

It will kill as quick as the bigger bores and shoot as flat as most of the smaller ones.

My second place choice and sentimental favorite is the 8MM Mag. A 220 grain bullet at 2950.

I like a handloaded 8x57 S-bore, 8mm-06 and 330 Dakota. There's lots of good medium bore choices.

Even though I'm having a 338-06 AI built, if I could only have one medium bore it would be a 358 Norma Mag. Oh yeah, we should all listen to what TXLoader has to say--seems that those who spend much time in that part of the world are pretty saavy. Gig 'em.

But, if I had to pick the greatest medium bore, arguably the most nearly perfect cartridge ever designed, it would be the .300 Dakota.

FWIW, I think medium bore means at least 200 grains of bullet, but less than 400 grains. There is a real clear break at the top of the range (.375 caliber, not .358!), but the 200 grains is somewhat arbitrary. Still the heaviest bullet for a .308 is a good bit heavier than the heaviest for the 7 mm - about the same jump as the .40 cals from the .375 cal (+25%). I love the 7 mm, but its a smallbore.

Everybody here is wet, the best medium bore is the 350 Rigby! Imagine the 375 H&H case, but w/o the belt, but retaining the slender taper that makes it feed so smooth, sharpen the shoulder up for headspace, move it back a tad, trim the case to 2.76", and turn the clock back not to 1912 when the H&H made its debut, but 1908, when the Rigby came out.

With modern bullets and powders we have 225 gr @ 3000+, 250 gr @ 2800+ and 280 gr @ 2600 fps. We also have a case that doesn't take up as much magazene capacity as the belted cases, or larger ones still. You also get nastalgia, and exclusivity, heck you'll have a round that very few folks will have ever heard of. Can't wait to get my whelen re-chambered!

I'm sorry, but being a "baby boomer" (on the older end!) makes me go with the .338 Winnie! I do so much respect the opinion of the rest of you who were around when dirt was new!

I took a friends Remmy 350 mag to Kodiak in the mid 70's...It kicked like none other. Was one of the short "pilot" favorites. The fellow offered to seel it to me for 150.00 American but I had a new daughter at the time and pile-high dr.bills! Think now that I should have scrounged up the money anyway.

Bill you and uncle Cyrus would have gotten along just fine. I remember his 350 mag, it kicked me like a midget mule, when I was in highschool stages. I didn't like it at all, sorry just the way I remember things I guess. I never figure I needed anything but the 270 cal rifle that was loaned to me by Dad at the time.

If I'm limited to 1 rifle, it would have to be the 300 Wby. Mag. It hurls a 200 gr. bullet at over 3000 fps, which will totally ruin Mr. Bullwinkle's day. Yogi's too! Drop to a 100 gr. bullet and your over 3800 fps. and a round that will shoot flat for as far as you can see. I've owned 1 for 15 yrs. and I'm going to buy 2 more for my boys. I own 30-06, 340 wby. and 375 H&H. The later 2 for nostalgic reasons more than anything else. Too big for most north american game. GRIZZ

Medium bores are .270 to .350 in this forum and with all of the excellent cartridges that are within that caliber range I'm supposed to pick one favorite! No way! There are just too many great rounds in that range to pick just one. I guess if someone had me in a hammer lock I would have to pick the .300 Win Mag. Itï¿½s not so large that I would get laughed out of my deer camp and still big enough for anything on the continent. Iï¿½m just glad I donï¿½t only have to pick one. Variety is the spice of life after all.
