Mauser 8mm-06 to 9.3x62

THE CHIEFMauser 8mm-06 to 9.3x62
I have a custom Mauser rifle, K98 action (thumb slot) that has been chambered to 8mm-06 and still shoots to minute of deer. Has had some mods done, such as, new stock, glass bedding, safety changed, and Timmney trigger installed. Problem is I don't use it much because of other similar calibers and it just sits in the safe.
Was thinking I could rebarrel to 9.3x62 but would appreciate other opinions. I do want to keep it metric in keeping with its european traditions.
Please comment and also recommend some gunsmiths who specialize in Mauser rebarreling.
Pictures below.
Thanks, Chief.

GeorgeSIn order to keep this thread in 'Big Bores', I suggest 10.75x68.

Tex21If you do decide to convert it, please let me know what your plans are for the barrel and reloading dies.

FOOBARI'm doing a 9.3x62 right now on a VZ-24 action using a Lothar Walther barrel. Go to the LW site for all the information.
There are many barrel makers that will do a contoured military barrel or any contour you want, and you have your choice of calibers from 6mm to 416 that can use the '06 case as a basis and come out with an excellent proposition. It basically depends on if you are a wildcatter, reloader or factory only person.
Reloading dies can be had at CH4D in almost any formulation you want and whatever wildcat you can think of.

Steffenhow about a .358 Norma?

a 358Norma requires bolt face work and simply fits mre easily in actions longer than a 98mauser.
I've seen two built on Remington 700s(both started life as magnums, one a 300 and one a 7mm)and one built on an M70 classic (originally a burned out 264) and the one that my brother currently has built on an M1903 Springfield (which required bolt face and feed rail work)
If his rifle already "works" as an 8mm-06 then a 366-08 is a simple rebarrel job.
With the only "difficulty" of either
A)Matching the original barrel contour on the new barrel
OR
B)Re-inletting the stock to accept a slightly larger barrel contour.
Personally I'd go with Re-inletting.
Though there is a "C" option... Reboring the exsisting barrel, but it isn't one I'd recommend considering the difference in cost between re-boring and simply replacing.
YMMV

kududeWhat a pretty rifle; I can understand why you want to re-chamber to something that you will use more often.
I am a big booster of the 9.3x62, and I don't think you can go wrong. For American game, however, there isn't really much the 9.3 will do that the 8mm-06 won't do, but for an African trip, the 9.3 would be truly hard to beat for a light/medium rifle. Kudude
PS: I don't know if you are planning to re-barrel or re-bore, but Montana Rifle has great 9.3 barrels. I have one on my Mark X Mauser. Kudude

THE CHIEFMany thanks to all for your suggestions and replies.
Think I'll go with the 9.3x62 to fill the gap, albeit small, between my 375 H&H and 338-06.
I have written z1r for his opinions.
Once again I appreciate the help.
Chief
You can´t go wrong with a 9.3x62 and if you want more punch then why not a 9.3x64?
The 9.3s have a lot of potential.

AtkinsonDo it, its and easy conversion...and a great caliber that compares with a .375 H&H...I love the old 9.3x62 and have shot it a lot on game, including Cape Buffalo...I found that I could load it to within 75 FPS of the 9.3x64 by using a 26" tube and RL-15...
Another option is the .375 Ruger, that is also and easy conversion, and has a bit more power.
