Does anyone load the 130 grain Speer or Hornady in the 300 Savage? These are intended to be game and not varmint bullets. Loaded to close to 2800fps in my Rem.722, it should be devistating on deer and hogs.

Joe Tried them in a 308 and a 30-30. In the 308 they still acted like varmit bullets. Penetrated a little better at 30-30 velocities. Used them to fill a couple doe tags. I will NOT use them again. I think you would be a lot better off with a 150 gr bullet.

Hi Joe, I've got the same rifle! Wouldn't the nosler partition be a good choice? Short enough bullet for the magazine and case for powder capacity and good terminal performance?

Joe,,We use the Hornady 165 sp or 165 NP in the 300 Savage with great results.

The bullets you mention will kill deer (and hogs, for that matter) about as well as any other .30 caliber bullet out of your .300 Savage. That said, you should be able to get a 150 grainer up around 2700 fps out of your 722, and using a 150 grain bullet will erase any doubt.

But if you goal is to extend the range of your .300 by using a lighter bullet at a higher velocity, by all means, go ahead. Shot in the proper place, both the deer and the hog will die forthwith.

I have used the Speer 130gr HP in a 30-06 and 308win for many years for deer. We have blacktail which are small deer here where I hunt and the 130gr HP is fantastic. We have taken over 300 with better results than any other bullet. Ranges are usually short and not over 200 yards.
That said I would(and do) NOT use them on hogs. I use Nosler 150gr Partition or in the no-lead zone 130-150gr BarnesTTSX or 150gr Hornady GMX bullets.
Maybe I am lucky but both the 130gr HP and the 150gr Nosler shoot to almost the same point of aim so I do not need to readjust the scope on the rifles.

2650 fs with 165 grainers and a good dose of rlr 15 is an excellent 300 savage load. 150 grainers are great for deer too..

I shoot 165gr rem corloks in my 300 99 at about 2400 works very well.

My hunting buddy and I have killed dozens of Kodiak Island blacktails with .300 Savage handguns and the Nolser 150 BTip at around 2400 fps. Most all were one shot kills from 5 yards out to over 250 yards. Out of a rifle I 'might' go with the 165 BTip - or not.
