338-06 Loads
I'm kinda new to this wonderful combo (in my opinion), but what is your favorite load and if you don't mind how long of a Barrel do you have?

62.0gr RL-17 on top of a 210gr Swift Scirocco. Barrel is 24in. It's gold.

i will have to look up the exact load, but the 165 ttsx has given me excellent groups out of my 338-06ai

Lagerboy RL17 is my favorite powder. What is your velocity with that load?

Humbarger it is 2860fps. I used to use H4350 but like you, RL17 has become the go to choice for this cartridge.
What velocity are you getting?

I load my 338-06 with H414 and 250 grain Nosler Partitions to 2450fps. Really good load for heavier game in the deeper bush.

I use either RL-17 or Norma MRP for everything from 30/40 Krag to 8mm-06 A.I.

30/40 Krag 160gr FTX-2500 fps RL-17 - 22" barrel
7mm-08 140gr Nosler BT-2950 fps RL-17 - 20" barrel
8x57 200gr Hot Core 2730 fps RL-17 - 23 1/2" barrel

I will be working up loads in 7X57 for a modern VZ-500 LR M98 action. RL-17 should get about 3050 fps with 140gr Nosler BTs at 60K pressure.

According to Quickload, RL-17 is a bit too fast for the 8mm-06 A.I. & Norma MRP should reach higher Mv at less pressure.

Norma MRP might be a good choice for the 338-06. Midway stocks it now.

Just so happens that my favourite custom rifle, a VZ24 Brno made '98 Mauser with 24" barrel, is in 338-06.
My load is with a Nosler 210gr Partition, win brass, WLR primer and 63gr of H4350.
Have also used Speer 200gr Hot Cors and 62.5gr of 760.
I adore this cartridge, it kills so cleanly with no muss nor fuss.

Cheers.

Shot that caliber for many years, but when the 338 win came out I abandoned it, and never a regret...Not to say the 338-06 isn't a great cartridge it is now and always will be. I preferred the 210 Nosler over the years for few deer and elk, one bear, and a few head of PG..

I do recall that IMR-4320 gave the best velocity hands down of any powder and I'd bet dollars to donuts it still will with 200, 210s and 250s..Don't overlook the 225 gr. Sierra, its a Idaho favorite where I drank coffee every morning.

Lagerboy the velocity of my 338/06 load with a 23" barrel in my Rem 7600 that I rebarreled was as follows.

185 Barnes ttsx
60.5 gr R17
average 5 shot velocity was a dispointing 2730 fps.
group was 7/8"

As Ray just said the best powder so far has been 4320.

Humbug that velocity you're getting is a little disappointing for sure but that's still a ton of energy.
I originally started out with 4320 as well using the Nosler 200 BTSP. Great velocity but you just had to watch for pressure spikes. RL17 is more forgiving in that respect.

I haven't messed with RL-17, but RL-15 is the cat's meow in my 338-06. 52.0 gr under a 210gr Swift SCII. I know it's kinda mild, but works great in my 23" CZ 550 and 16" Encore hand cannon.

Heeler you really should give RL17 a try. It's a whole different animal. There is an article on 6mmbr.com about it and it"s properties. I think you will be impressed with the results.

185 TTSX, Varget 58.5 grains. I have two 338-06s. The 22 inch barrel gets 2875 and the 23 right at 2900 fps. Been a killer and super accurate load.

Looking thru my files I used 55 grs. of IMR-4320 for 2844 FPS and best accuracy..It was a max load in my gun, although I went up several grains to find out where absolute max was, then cut back to 55 grs. It was an amazing rifle and would duplicate factory .338 win. stuff but not 338 Win handloads..common with that wonderful 30-06 case and several calibers gleaned from it.

I use a Weatherby mark 5 light weight in 338-06 , I use Sierra bullets 215 Gr, and IMR 4350 61 grains of powder . I have restocked this rifle to a thumb hole stock, and bedded it ! If I do my job I can shoot a 1" group. This load has dropped everything I aimed the gun at with one shot , including a bull Elk at 100 yards !

Last year my Kimber 8400 Classic in 30-06 got a New barrel in 338-06 A-Square.
It is a Lothar Walter 24 " blued.

My hunting load (moose and red deer) is a 225 grs Woodleigh PP on top of 54 grs of Vihtavouri N 150.
Velocity, 2600 fps.
Good accuracy and a pleasant caliber to shoot.

Scope is Zeiss Victory HT, 1,5-6x42 in Talley Mounts.

A bit unstady rest, but make do...

5 shot at 100 meter from the Caldwell rest.

Thank you guys.
Yes, hunting starts next week as we are traveling to our neighbour country Sweeden for fallow bucks and boar.

Roe deer, red deer and moose hunting start here in Norway in September and last to Christmas, hopefully a good season to come for all of us Smiler
