I only hunt with this rifle once a year, when I accumulate enough spent factory fodder I s'pose I'll start.
chicken/egg thing I guess!

El DeguelloThe 30/40 is quite a cartridge. It is very strong, and holds more powder than the 308. Put it in a strong action like the Ruger No. 3, and watch what happens if you handload for it!

VemoI am hunting wyoming antelope with a winchester 1895, 1912 issue. It's braggin rights to see who has the oldest rifle in camp, the filthy ho's will be eatin crow this year! (if I can find fodder for it) Last year I hunted with a savage 1895B, lost to a guy who had a spanish musket I never heard of before, .65 caliber I think. I argued that we allow metallic cartridges only but was overruled.

seafire2too many guys hot rod the old Krag..
mine is an 1898 Military Carbine Calvary Model...
the Krag's claim to fame was for velocity of the time at the turn of the century... in the 2000 fps range with 220 grain bullets...
that is what I load mine for and I use SR 4759 or IMR 4198 powders to obtain those velocities..
yeah, the case is capable of more with modern and slower burn rate powders...but the antique action is something I don't want to mess up trying to make a 30/06 out of it... I have several 06s if I need an 06....
of course back in those days, folks knew hunting meant getting closer than 'off the hood of your pickup and shooting at 400 yds plus...'

VemoYep, me too.
a couple extra fps doesn't mean squat to me.
