Would kind of like your views on the following:

Just got back from the local gun emporium (where else would I spend Saturday afternoon?). In the used gun rack, they had two rifles side-by-side, both .30-06's. One, is a Remington M-710, condition NRA ANIB, price $179. The other is a well-used Remington M-721, condition NRA G-VG, Price $249.

Any words of wisdom?

BTW, I didn't have time to explore that "3-lugs locking directly into the barrel" thingy of the M-710. Is it basically the same as the old Sportco system? How has it generally been working out in real-world use?

The 710's that I have fired were reasonably accurate but the actions were so rough that I had to take the rifle off of my shoulder to cycle the bolt.

I dunno AC, 179 bucks seems like a hell of a price for a good doorstop! In all seriousness, the 710 is the lousiest action I have ever had the displeasure of using. I took a guy I know with me as a guest at the range I belong to and he had a 710 chambered in 270 Win that he let me shoot and I could hardly get it to cycle as the action is so rough. When I close the bolt I'd have to hit the bolt handle with the heal of my hand as a normal pull with my fingers couldn't close it without dismounting the rifle. I wouldn't recommend this model to anybody. Having to give the bolt the gorilla treatment is probably why this model has a reputation of having the bolt handle break off at the solder joint.

Near as I can tell, the 710 is a "throwaway" rifle. Might be okay for the very casual hunter or as a last resort spare or loaner. Might be better than nothin' but that's about it. Buy the 721.

Look at the Stevens 200's. They go for about $250 new. The 710 is not a good design. Don't buy it.

The combs are low for a scope on the 721's. Otherwise I would keep looking and saving.

My 721 is very accurate.....and strong as well. It has a flaw however in that it needs to be restocked to use a scope. The original stock has far too much drop in it and forces one to raise his head off the stock to see thru a scope.

The action and barrel is extremely good. Lacking a hinged floorplate don't bother me either. I've heard that the M-700 floorplate will fit it.

Mine is in 300 H&H and is in the classifieds for sale if you want to see the stock. If the one you're looking at is a magnum it'll make a .375 or .461 mag easily

I would by the 721
I bought a used one for $175 at a gunshow last year that needed alot of help. After getting it cleaned up and such it shoots and loks very good.I had a scope on it but Vapo is right on this one having to much drop.I put a williams peep on it. they are very good rifles.

If it cant be Grown it has to be Mined! Devoted member of Newmont mining company Underground Mine rescue team. Carlin East,Deep Star ,Leeville,Deep Post ,Chukar and now Exodus Where next? Pete Bajo to train newbies on long hole stoping and proper blasting techniques.
Back to Exodus mine again learning teaching and operating autonomous loaders in the underground. Bringing everyday life to most individuals 8' at a time!

Well, like you need to hear it again, after all of these responses, but...

No doubt, avoid the 710.

Get the 721, maybe put an aftermarket stock on it, and go shooting!

Thanks for your opinions, guys. Actually, I don't plan to buy either. I have over 100 rifles in my vault now, including a number of good '06s ranging from a G&H Springfield through M70's and Rem 700-C's to an S&L "free rifle".

I just haven't ever used a M-710 of any sort, and kinda wondered why the not-too-great condition M-721 was selling for 25%+ more bucks....

If I were forced to choose between those two, I'd pay the extra for the 721. Given a wider selection, I would buy NEITHER of them!!

Man...after reading these coments then my reply; I'm sure to be and do feel like a bug in a jar. BUT I OWN A 710. Bought it because the Bitch (notice the capital B) I was married to had control of more than just the p$$$y. Maybe I got hold of a decent 710 - I have 1 shot kills on whitetail 100 yards out to 450 yards, mule deer about the same and longest shot on a turkey was about 400 yards plus/minus. I'm saving my $$ for a Dakota now & I will get one soon. Season before last the Bitch left me for another woman while out with that crappy ol' 710. THANK GOD!

Don't feel bad I own 2 710's and as of yet no problems with either one.

One in 30/06 and one in 7MM

Have shot the 30/06 about 200 rounds and still holding up{no fallen off bolt handles}

Action does get smoother the more you use it 7 MM is still stiff,but again so is a new car engine till it breaks in

As to pressed in barrel well I own a big bunch of AK-47's and all have pressed in barrels but pinned also.

So what is the deal on that.

All I can see is if you shoot it like 200 rounds a week then you might have a get a new barrel but not in a average persons lifetime I would say.

Look at all the Garands with 5000 plus rounds thru the barrel and still shooting with a lower class of steel back in the 1930's and 1940's

Another thing that gets me a little off key is all the bashing of some gun makers product from some folks who have never owned one but heard about it and now they all are crap.

So I say well I guess I will not pay the rent for awhile and go get me a $900.00 plus rifle $1000.00 scope to shoot a deer once a Year.

I bet I own more guns then most average folks do say at last count 34 long guns half are semi auto AK's

Plus I do own a Savage in .243

Sorry to hear about the lady running away seems to be a lot of that going around my niece ran off with the used car salesman and left her husband who makes 5 times what the salesman makes so who knows keep the faith

Yeah, but I think the 710 was what comes to mind when you hear that old saying....

The 710 Sucks in my book, but it still is a heck of lot Better than some other junk I have seen in used racks out there....

NOT long in the future it will go the way of the Rem 600, the Winchester 100, the 788 etc....

but for the guy that has one, and it works.. what the hey?

10 yrs ago, no self respecting gun lover would hunt with a Savage 110... Now it is hard to find a good used on on the rack locally around here...
When you do, they are not available for the $75.00 they use to be....

Yep. Livin alone for the last 7 years has been the best longivity insurance plan I could ever have taken out. That's when my Bitch split, the second one. Won't be doin the marriage bit ever again...
On a good day, my BP is 120/70. On a bad day, my BP is 120/70. Life is grand. I'm 71 and going strong. Lots of stray stuff around to stay in practice with too, with zero strings attached.

LAWNDART...you surly are right about the GOOD LORD smiling on me. It took some time to realize it but he did. All me & my boy do now is hunt, fish, camp and buy all the stuff we want to go do it with. We had a good dove hunt the last 2 days to kick off a new season.

I bought a 710. Waited a few months and sighted it in. Mine was also in '06. When I took it home to clean it, bits a pieces of plastic came out. Not only does this rifle have the worst bolt I have ever felt (thought it was just mine,) it falls to pieces after minimal use. The weapon was inoperable and returned to dealer for a weatherby.

So back to the original question considering what we have learned:
The 721 is like an attractive older woman who though somewhat past her prime can still reward your efforts with years of pleasure due to her original and lasting qualities.
The 710 is like a bitch who runs off with another lesbian whore, useful for but a moment and likely to screw up in a number of ways..................DJ

The 710 succeeds at what it was designed for, a low cost shooting iron that gets people to buy them and gets Remingtons name out there in the public eye more, most of them shoot perfectly adequate and are a good gun for the person that wants to get into hunting with a low expenditure on a rifle. Personally I don't care for them. They are ok if you like them, just not me.
The 721 is a classic, and most have many years still left in them. I think they have the accuracy over the 710 by a good bit. I like the older guns a bit more than the rifles of the last 30 or so years.
