QUESTIONS: Remington 700 .338
ported barrel, leupold scope $700.00.
I realize this is sketchy info
but
Does this sound like a good deal?
This is an ad in my local paper.
I haven't seen the gun yet.
Besides finish and fit what should I be looking out for?
Expected accuracy? Range?
How does it compare to other .338s?

SnellstromThe ported barrel would be an immediate thumbs down for me but others are not so picky. Every time I see a gun for sale I just figure it as a sum of its parts.
Used 700 ADL/BDL Remington $350-400-450
Used Leupold scope $200
then adjust any figure up or down $50 for new condition or really used condition and there you have it. Add ons like muzzle brakes, porting, slings swing no value and may be a negative rather than a positive.
I have the 338 RUM and I have a brake on it for sighting in. For hunting I take the brake off and put a thead protector on it to protect the theads. It has some recoil but not that bad.

Thomas JonesDepends on the scope.
Leupolds vary in price quite a bit.
i don't like breaks either.
the newer remingtons have excelent recoil pads.
Personaly I would by a new one with the limb saver and leave the ear buster alone.

It would be an accident if it shoots to the same point of impact both with and without the brake. Have you checked it both ways from the bench?

Like others, the ported barrel would be a deal killer for me. Buying the gun with the idea of replacing the barrel makes little sense since a new barrel would cost you at least $300 or more by the time it is installed and finished.

SIR MAUSERIf it's been magna-ported the recoil will be less and the noise about the same. I have a Win. Mod 70 in 338 WM like this; shoot Federal 180 Accubonds - kicks considerably less than Remington African Plains in 300 WBY. with 165's. Remington weighs a pound more.

buckeyeshooterI am not big on the porting, but it might be of use if it is an ultra mag. Which 338 is it? a win mag or ultra mag?
Leupolds generally have good resale value. At least the VXII's and up do. So that's possibly worth something there. Otherwise you need more info.
