I stumbled across a Ruger 77 Hawkeye full stock in 30-06 with a matte grey stainless action barrel and a wood stock. The pics look nice, and I have to admit Im interested in it as sort of a "General Purpose" medium game rifle, especially since 30-06 is pretty much available everywhere.

My buddies all insist full stock rifles are inherently not accurate. My first reaction is while I understand its not a free floated target rifle, I suspect its certainly "Minute of a Brisket" at 200m.

Im familiar with M77s, my 375H&H is an old Ruger Safari Rifle, that I love. Im not sure what the "Hawkeye" designation changes.

Thoughts?

There was some subtle changes from the M77 Mark II and the Hawkeye, safety is similar bolt same stock similar etc.
You should get it otherwise you will always regret not buying it.

Yeah I am liking it more and more. It looks like it would be perfect with a low power optic and a #1 retical--and maybe a double set trigger.

Lets say its not a .5 rifle but 1.5 rifle that's 4.5 inch group at 300 yards.

One can kill lots of game with that kind of accuracy.

If you like and handles good for you buy and go shoot things with it.

I've owned about a dozen 77 RSI carbines over the years. .250-3000, .257R, 7x57, .308 and .30-06. They all shot about 1.5" at 100 yds. The barrel is the same profile as the Ultralight model, and it heats up quickly after 3 shots or so.

The Hawkeye uses the LC-6 trigger, which is a vast improvement over the trigger on the Mk II. Much more crisp and light.

The .250 Savage and the .308 Winchester made the most of efficient use of powder, given the short barrel.

The main difference between a hawkeye and a mk 2 is steel bottom metal mat finish and reshaped stock.
The rifle you describe sounds cool.
But a double set trigger seems a mistake on such a rifle.
A set trigger is for precise shooting.
in a quick handling rifle it might get in the way.
I have two hawkeyes and i did a cheap quick trigger job by replacing the trigger return spring with one from wolf industries.

Ive owned several RSIs and they sure handle sweet. I like,em. They all shot well.

The ones that I glass bedded all shot fantastic. Oh the wonders of glass in factory rifles!

I have a Ruger 77 RSI MkII in .308. It typically shoots 3 to 4 3 shot groups into <1". Then it heats up and accuracy goes south until it cools down. I really enjoy it.
There is one downside with the Leupold VX-III 2.8-8x36 (?) I have mounted. The rear sight gets in the way of the scope's bell and I had to mount the scope higher than I would have liked. Thus my cheek weld on the stock is not the best.
Part of this is my fault as I was overly cautious and bought high rings. Looking at it now, I think medium rings would have worked.
As an aside on this, it is a shame that Ruger spent so little effort at marketing the 7 RSI. I wish they would have brought it out in .260 Remington (or even 6.5x54 since 6.5 ammo is now so readily available) as a modern day version of the Mannlicher-Schoenauer 1903 6.5x54 carbine, since the 1903 MS was one of Bill Ruger's favorite rifles. What a great tribute rifle that would be.

I had a Ruger 77RSI in 30-06. It was not fun to shoot. Too much muzzle blast.
I got a full stock FS550 by CZ in 9.3x62. It has a slightly longer barrel; it recoils more, but for some reason I like it more.

My Wife's MkII RSI in .308 shoots 2 inches at 100 yards with Remington Core-lokts and a $200 scope.
