efficient?
What would you say are the most efficient medium bores in barrel lengths of 20" to 22"? What I mean by efficient is most powder burn and least effected velocity, not cost of ammo. Thanks! Gary

In a 20-22 in my OPINION when you get larger than a 06 type case you are going to have trouble burning the extra powder in the barrel. So before coffee
30-06, 338-06, 35 Whelen, 9.3x62 375 Whelen

I know Ruger is sticking the 416 Ruger in a short barrel. Do bigger cases work sure but you burn a lot of extra powder for the gain you will get.

As usual just my $.02

For shorter barrels it's hard to beat anything in the 308 family, 7mm-08, 308, 338 Federal or 358 Win.

Gary,

Not sure what promted that question, but just a thought of caution:

I've never bought a rifle or picked a cartridge because the barrel or cartridge case was "EFFICIENT"!

Now, I do have a 308 and a 303 with 20" barrels because the concept of these rifles are "COMPACT".

Ray, You hit the nail on the head. I like shorter, compact rifles and was trying to pick everyones mind for caliber. First thing that came to my mind was a 308. Trying to think outside my box!

Id say 308 also. Never wanted one till I got a killer deal on a '53 m70 featherwight in 308 winchester and started reloading and shooting it. Now I like 308s alot

I think the 358W wins hands down for energy with least amount of powder! Good enough to take moose at 200 meters.

+1 for the 358 Win. They don't make 'em any more efficient.
