Best way I know to get ready for elk hunting has little or nothing to do with rifles!

It is a moot point now, but I was going to carry a White .504... The reason I say was, is that one week ago yesterday I had surgery to fuse C-4 and C-5 neck vertebrae. I drew an early muzzleloader elk tag for SE Idaho, but the surgery is going to make my trip this year a non-event.

Oh well... maybe I will get lucky and draw again next year.

That really does suck! You should contact F&G and with your Dr.'s note you may be able to get a "buy" for next year. I have heard of this happening in various States. Hopefully this might work out for you? In any event, your health is more important! Don't get crazy and go anyway, stay home and heal!

Wow guys, very nice rifles. I'd be nervous taking some of those into the elk woods. I'm using a bone stock Ruger 77 in 300WM with a Leupold 3-9x40, shooting 180gr. partitions. It's pretty much the only rifle take for elk.

Depending on the weather and where I'm going, I may take my Win. M94 in 30-30 shooting 170gr. partitions with Williams Firesights.

Nothing fancy, but they get the job done.

I feel guilty for posting this in the medium bore section, but you asked.

I'm shooting the 100 gr TTSX @ over 3100 fps. Groups are running around 3/4 MOA. Caliber is 257 Roberts.

Alan - are those S & K bases/rings?

Whatever they are, they're very, very NICE! Big Grin

Friarmeir,

Yes! S&K sent them "in the white" so Glen Morovitz could rust blue them with all the other metal. What I really liked about them was the ease of mounting. I was anxious about dinging something and leaving a mark either the rifle or the scope. I called S&K and asked how many times they could be bent open/closed while trying different scopes. "Indefinite" was their answer as long as I opened them just enough to slip the scope in. Also, once I mounted the rings w/ scope into the bases, they were secure enough to not fall out but loose enough to allow the scope to be slid fore/aft for eye relief or rotated to align the reticle in a vertical position. Once those adjustments were made, it was simple to tighten the hex heads on the side of each base. This allowed me to try several different scopes until I settled on the VX3 2.5-10 you see here. It just barely fit with about 1/16" of wiggle room.

I had planned on only allowing my M70 to be a fair weather rifle but the Eberlestock backpacks with internal scabbards and especially the butt stock hood will take care of that.

Their hunting packs.

The hood

really gives our "safe queens" a chance to come out and play.

Thanks Alan!

It's great to see a detailed picture of the S & K's - especially on an M70. I've been wondering about them for some time, but had never seen a good picture.

The rings themselves - I suspect they are either the "medium" or "high" model??? I would probably need to try the "low" myself.

And the bases - none prettier, in my opinion.

Many thanks again,

friar

I really like your 35 Whelen, very special indeed. We get your target velocites with 59 RL15, but you know what they say every rifle a law unto itself. Try IMR4064.

How about a little schooling for me, on how to post pictures here. I'd appreciate the help.

Vapo,

Great looking gun. Did Jim do the stock? I've sent him an email concerning my Model 70. Will probably call him to firm up some ideas.

Hope you filled the freezer!

Take Care and have a great deer season. Our rifle season opens Sat. Depending on weather, Cooper model 54 308. or Win. model 70 Extreme Weather 308. Don't have the Coop 280 AI ready to go yet.
