What's a WSSSSSSSSM? Buy a 358 Winchester and be finished.

I have never understood the need of a short action..I hear a lot of gobbly goop about short strocking a 30-06, or whatever but only if you cannot chew gum and walk at the same time is that a problem..You really are limiting your choices by going tht route. I can build a 06, 270, even a 9.3X62 as light and handy as I can a .308 or whatever...

I guess the answer to your question boils down to a 338 Federal ( a runt .338 Win.) or a 350 Rem magnum ( would be my choice for elk ), but the .308 is probably the winner, if there is one.

I find a .300wsm Kurz Mauser a much nicer package than a .300H&H DropBox MagnumMauser.

No matter what one may attempt to do to a std.LR M98 or long LR M98, it will never result in a rifle that matches the weight & handling dynamics possible in a rifle built on the small ring Kurz.

What can be built on short actions may be of benefit and joy to some, but not to others.
