30 06 twist rates
Gents:

What twist will enable one to shoot 180-220 grain bullets in a 30 06? Does barrel length affect this?

thanks.

Go with 1-10 twist. Barrel length has nothing to do with it.

12" twist will be the slowest to use. Yes barrel lenght does effect this. You will want a 22" minimum, preferable a 24-26". Velocity determines RPM which means stability so you want to have enough velocity to stabilize the bullets over the distance you are shooting them.

If you have a shorter barrel then the standard 10" twist is the way to go.

I had two 30-06 build with 1/11 twist barrel used in both rifles one barrel was from Lilja 3 groove other from Bartlein 5r. I have to say shooting the same load the Lilja barrel was faster but it had 2" more barrel. I then had the lija barrel cut to same length as the Bartlein then it became alittle slower.

Never know. I shoot 180's in both 30-06 haven't tried 200gr but think they would work OK.

A 1-10" twist has worked well for all bullet weights normally used in the 30-06 for over 100 years and still remains the best choice. 220 grain bullets are traditional, as they were in the Krag before, and 99% of the rifles firing them had a 1-10" twist. IIRC only a few -06s were different, like Remington's varmint model and Husqvarna for example, where a 1-12" twist was used.

Tikka/Sako uses 1/11 twist for all their 30 caliber rifles.

Best thing if your building something call barrel guy your going to use and he give you what bullets work.

Use enough twist and one does not have to wring the last FPS out to stabilize the bullet

1 in 10 twist is the standard and works extremely well
