30 06 168 gr TSX??

Anyone load this bullet? What kind of velocities did you get and with what powder?

Have you taken game with this load and what kind of results did you get?

This bullet is what we hope to have loaded for my father's 06. It may be used on Moose, Sheep, elk and possibly Griz.

59 gr IMR 4831 for 2850 fps, but not nearly the penetration or energy of the 200 AB.

I am a big fan of the TSX barnes. I have had good luck with the 168 in my .308 with IMR-4064 but I did not do so well with my 06.
For the game you are talikg about I think i would go with a 180.
And even with that skip the GRIZ. I mean if you had to shoot one in self defence I supose an 06 with a tripple shock at close range would give you a prety fair chance but If you go hunting griz with an 06 , I think you are making a mistake.
I would take nothing less than a .338 or a 45/70 lever with some serious hand loads.
But I know others seem to like 300 mags.
I must admit to never even seeing a griz out side a zoo, but I heve seen Elk take several good hits from an 06 and last a lot longer than it would take a griz to catch and kill you.

My kid used the 168TSX from his '06 to kill this one last fall. 320 yards.

We loaded 50.0 gr. Varget, seated .055 off the lands and were getting about 2800 and 1/2" groups. We tried H4895 and BLC(2) but accuracy dropped a bit.

I've seen enough griz taken with 160 gr X's out of 7mm Rem mags to have no worry in the 30 cal 168 TSX killing a griz under the proper circumstances.

This one was killed with a 257 Roberts!

a 165gr TSX will do anything a lead core bullet weighing 180-200grns will do.

And anything that can't be killed with a 30-06 and a 165-168gr TSX bullet probably shouldn't be killed with a 30caliber at all.

Of course proud members of the heavy bullet mafia
will never agree to these statements and Mark Dobreski is sure to turn up and ask how many griz I've killed

(I'll save myself time and say: "F U Mark" now.)

Now I will sit back and wait for the five (or more) members of the forum to tell me that a 7mmMag loaded with 140gr TSX's is inadequate for whitetails and that I should switch to 160's for better penetration....

Damn, and I thought I had it figured out even started to understand sectional density, but I guess I've been lied to again!

I was beginning to think that the 180 & 200 gr bullets would do a better job on some shots and that the heavier bullets would put the game down faster. Have to give all that up now!

Woods, I'll load up some 200 gr AB's this summer and test them against the 168SX... I'd bet the 168 will have nearly identical, if not more, penetration.

I would prefere to give my ol'man something a little flatter shooting than the 200 gr AB. 2600 fps is best I've been able to get without losing adequate accuracy.

He's not the most skilled rifleman and a shot at sheep may require him stretching his abilities. I would like to see him applying minimal hold over if the once in a life time chance at a stone sheep arises.

I use Reloader 19 (I like it better then IMR 4350)with this combo and am getting over 2900 fps. Its a very flat shooter and will knock over anything reasonable with an '06 very well.

Personally, I think you are well armed with the game you intend to hunt.

Hey BR,

Last evening when I made the last post, I didn't have my reloading notes in front of me and didn't want to go by memory.

*-Please note, these are probebly over standard book loads and must be worked up with caution.

60.5 grains R-19- 2923 fps, 2"
61.0 grains R-19- 2950 fps, 1"
61.5 grains R-19- 2965 fps, 0.75"- best load
62.0 grains R-19- 2975 fps, 1.5" - very hot

I settled on 61.5 grains as my load.

For the 200 grain Accubonds my load is 58.5 grains Reloader 22. I am getting 2625 fps with this load and excellent accuracy. I also like IMR 4831 for 200 grain bullets very much and this powder tends to give highest velocities for me.

I'll give it a try but...

We have a winner!

Very first group was with 59.0 gr of IMR 4350, Win Brass and Fed 210 primers

2870 fps, 3/4"@100

I will try a few more but this old Ithaca(Tikka) shoots pretty consistent. This load should take care of anything we run into and at any range that my father is capable of shooting.

Already did that. In all cases for me, they were identical.

Yep. Totally satisfied too. Only using 55.0 H4350, don't remember velocity off top of my head but it didn't matter. All mulie, and whitetail had pass throughs and were all DRT.
