factory 300WSM ammo
Going to draw an elk tag for next year (so I'm told) by those who say they know! I will be shooting factory ammo. What say you? What should I buy/try?

Winchester Supreme 180gr Accubonds or the Winchester Supreme Elites 180gr XP3's get my vote. Next would be Federal premium in 180gr Accubonds or TSX's.

300wsm's not going fast enough to cause velocity related bullet failure in a 180gr cup and core bullet. They'll work, but there are "other" choices (I'll say other instead of better lol)

With Fed you have Fusions, Trophy Bonded, Accubond, Barnes TSX and MRX, Nosler Parts...wow Federal loads a lot of diff bullets lol. With Winchester I 2nd the notion of Supreme Elite XP3 bullets as this was the replacement for the Fail Safe, my favorite bullet, but have no experience or have heard anything good or bad about the E-tip, which is a solid copper w/plastic tip. Partitions and Accubonds as well. Rem has the Swift Sciroco, but havent seen the A Frame. I believe Black Hills is loading now, as well.

While I too am a big fan of premium bullets and generally hunt with Nosler Partitions or Barnes TSX bullets, I can tell you that you should not scoff at the Winchester load with the 180 grain PP.

I have a friend who owns a custom built 300 WSM. No matter what we tried, we could not get any of my handloads to shoot in it as well as Winchester factory 180 grain PP's.

He wound up taking them to Africa for plains game and had great success with them, no problems of any kind.

Same experience with my brothers 300 win! The factory 180g el cheapo Win PP so far outgroups my handloads for his rifle. But, I AM a begginer, so we'll see. What really suprised me was chronographing the Win silver box....they were averaging 3100fps!! Thats over 100fps more then advertsied

MileHigh,

Irecently purchased a new 300 wsm and found that the win pp's shot as well as accubonds in 180 gr. I used the pp's on a spike elk I shot last saturday morning. One shot kill at 150 yards. They work.

oh i have no doubt at that. theyll work just fine, only reason to not use them is if you wanted better ballistics from a more streamlined bullet (such as the accubonds for example)
