Tom Sbarrel length on 300 RUM
was wondering what length you guys recommend for a 300 RUM?? been considering cutting mine down to 24 or 25 inch its currently at 26 inch just so its a little more easier to carry in the woods

PRWMy 375 has a 26 in barrel,I don't have any problem even crawling through the brush with it. In your case, why have a large such capacity cartridge with a short barrel? It's specialty is long range shooting. I'd opt for a different cartridge with a short barrel - good excuse for another rifle.

Have trouble seeing how 1" will make a difference.

I carry a rifle on my back while trapping on a snowmachine,, I detect no noticeable difference in the amount of time they snag on brush between my 20" 358 and my 26" 300imp. On foot in the alders your rifle is usually ahead of you anyway. I've never noticed animals complaining about being killed with a shorter barrel either.
I tend to use more than enough gun

Idaho Sharpshooterhow much velocity would that cut cost you? Maybe as much as 200fps going to 24".
As a younger man, I hunted 100% three years with a Sante Fe Hawken. 32" barrel. Never saw any difference packing that 12lb dog around the mountains here in Idaho.

BlacktailerPut a brake on mine until I shot it once without ear protection. Cut the damned brake off. It started out with 26" it's now 25". Haven't bothered to rechrono my loads but see no difference in handling. I also would leave it at 26. If you cut it down you might end up with a 300 Win that just burns more powder.

No way - 60 FPS max loss for 2 inches less barrel. Probably less than 60 fps.
Having said that, I would keep it at 26"

emronBest barrel length for 300 RUM, 30-378 etc: 27". IMO

Blair 338RUMA longer barrel: i.e. 28" helps with the lovely blast.........and velocity.
I wouldn't cut the barrel back from 26"

Gerry300 RUM? IMO 26" minimum, I'd rather have 28".
Cheers,

SaeedMy 30/404 - which predates the 300 RUM but very similar to it - has a 27.5" barrel.
I am getting 3430-3480 fps from 180 grain bullets, depending on the make.
Very accurate.

DoublessIf carrying is the issue, have a safari style banded swivel stud put on the barrel. It will allow the rifle to ride lower on your shoulder and reduce the chance of the barrel catching a low hanging branch...

Dan HI would not cut it down, since velocity is the purpose of that round. Losses will vary depending on powder choice, but more blast and less speed is a lousy tradeoff, IMO.
Mine will stay 26, and if replaced likely grow longer....
As always, suit yourself!

TailgunnerUmm can you cut it at 30-32"?
My 300 RUM wears a 30" tube and the brake adds another 1 1/2" to that.

Tapper2I have a customer that had a 300 RUM that wouldn't shoot as tight as he wanted. Thought it might be the crown so we re-crowned it, no difference. His next move, he asked that I cut it back 2". It went right to .5 MOA. He lost about 50 to 75 fps, but gained 3 times the accuracy. If a 24" barrel gives you better balance and easier handling in the bush, it's all good. You'll never notice the velocity change, especially if you reload......Tom
