Rob1SG185 TTSX at 3100fps
Loaded up some of these in my 338-06 w/ RL15 for a cow elk hunt. I was very surprised at the chrono readings. Have anyone else tried this comb and what were your results? Rob

mulerider777Rob, I have three .338-06 rifles and have never loaded anything but the 210 and 225 bullets. 4064 does good for me in two of the three rifles with chronograph showing 2793fps with the TSX. It does almost as good with RE15. The 210 Nosler PT is almost as good. Also IMR4350 does pretty good. One is a CZ550 that Wayne at AHR put togather and the other is an Interarms with a Kreiger barrel on it. Needless to say I really like the caliber---nearly as well as the .35 Whelen.
I am near Wichita Falls-not too far from you.

Rob1SGMulerider, I've tried about all of the 200-225 bullets. I've taken most of my elk with the 200gr Accubond and Northfork both gave full penetration on elk. Powders I've tried are 4064,Varget,N150,Big Game and H4350. The 185 TTSX is almost the length of the 225's and I was shocked at the Velocity. BC is .432 and 3942 ft lbs at the muzzle.

D HumbargerRob what kind of accuracy are you getting? I might give those 185s a try.

Rob1SGDoug, I'm under 1" with three shots when I do my part. I am trying Varget again next week as I've done very well with it in the past. Rob

D HumbargerMy 338/06 loves Reloder 15 & 200 & 225 gr noslers but I just got some Reloder 17 to try. It might be the ticket with the 185s too.

Rob1SGDoug RL 17 works great in my 6mm Rem w/ 80gr bergers and I thought about it with the heavier 338 bullets but not with the 185 but it does sound interesting.
Mulerider have you tried RL 17 in your rifles??
01 April 2012, 04:43
D HumbargerReloder 17 is fairly new & there is very little data for it right now. I originaly bought it to use in the 284 win that I just built. The bench rest crowd says it is THE powder for the 284 Win. Once I run some test with it I'll post the results.

I'm loading for my sons .284 Win and bought some RL 17 but haven't started yet.
Are you using IMR 4350 info to get started?
I hope to find a 140 grain bullet load for it.

mulerider777Rob, Haven't tried RE17, but it seems to be in the burning rate of IMR4350 which I tried several years ago. Velocity was good, but the IMR4064 was slightly more accurate. I will try some in the future.

D HumbargerWhen you get tech support at Alliant powder you talk to Ben. He told me to treat R17 like IMR4350 when working up a load.

BoxheadI took a decent 5x6 bull in 2004 using the 185 gr TSX from my 338-06 running a bit over 2900 fps. A 280 yard quartering away shot. The bullet went in just behind the near shoulder and through the off shoulder being stopped by the hide. I looks like a wadcutter having lost all petals and weighing 122 grs. The bull absolutley dropped at the shot. I have since gone to the 225 gr Accubond and have taken both black and grizzly bear with it. In and out in both cases.

Rob1SGBoxhead, Have you or anyone tried RL 17 with the 225gr Accubond.

I tried it & it's not even close to Reloader 15 in accuracy.

Rob1SGJust got back from the range this morning tried some loads of Varget accuracy was there 1/2" but both loads of 57.5gr and 58gr were too hot. Sticky bolt and slightly cratered primer. Also toyed with seating depth with the RL 15 charge of 58gr best accuracy was OAL of 3.295 measured .980 outside edges minus 1 caliber is .642 3 shots at 100yds. I think i've found what I was looking for with the 185 TTSX. These loads were only safe in my rifle work up if you use them.
