.270 Win or .270 Wby?
My dad went to the Yuma, AZ gunshow this weekend and came up with a nice FN-Mauser-actioned rifle in .270 Win. He offered it to me and the choice of having it rebarreled in .270 Wby (we have a great gunsmith, so the end product either way will shoot).

I've been wanting a .270 M70 for awhile, but I don't know much about the .270 Wby. I'd be using it for desert mule deer, whitetails and probably antelope (or my .300 H&H Mag).

Right now I have M70's in .300 H&H, .35 Whelan AI and .375 H&H, so I need something on the lighter side of .300. And I'm also a big fan of "classic rifles in classic calibers". Call me a romantic if you will [Wink] .

Thanks for the feedback in advance.

A 270 in in regular 270 Winchester or Wheatherby would be fine acquisition to your collection of Model 70's, but if you're going to rebarrel, consider the WSM. Oh, can you do that on a long action? Maybe not I don't know. [Confused]
Either one you choose, I don't think you'll be disappointed. my own personal preference would be the Winchester 270, and if you can rebarrel to the WSM, I go that route, brass and or loaded ammo would be easier and less expensive to obtain.
Variety of loads would also be better.
You'll love the lighter recoil, considering the other rifles you stated you now own, the 270 Winchester will be a dream come true! [Wink]

If you like "classic rifles in classic calibers" then I would leave the gun as is. The .270win will do everything that you listed that you would ask of it and it is a very pleasant cartridge to shoot. And your choice of factory ammunition will be much greater and at a more reasonable price than .270wby.

FWIW,

The .270 win would be just what you need.

Don't fall for the weatherby or the silly 270 WSM [Big Grin] [Big Grin]
270 win is a great cartridge and doesn't need to be improved, shortend, fatter or faster [Big Grin] [Big Grin]

I think I would be a great match for your 300 and 375. I will make a really classic rifle tripple. The 270 covers the gap well and ammo is just too easy to find if you don't handload

My own feeling is the standard 270 can't be improved on... if you need more, better to go to a 300 Mag... or better yet a 338WM.

Classic rifle in a classic caliber? I think you already know what you want. I've always liked the .270WBY though. It's a flat shooting hard hitting round. Since you're talking about a rebarrel you can have it cut with no freebore and you've got yourself a real tac-driver. The question you need to ask yourself is do you really need the extra FPS the WBY will provide? If not get the .270 W.C.F and don't look back.
