I met Larry sellers at the SCI show, and set him up with a new Blaser R8 2-barrel set in 270 and 9.3x62 at a great price, all in a Pelican takedown travel case. Another convert to the Dark Side! Could you be next? :-)

I'd consider one if they made a two barrel set in 6,5x68S and 8x68S. Since the .40 Newton was based on the x68 case, maybe a third barrel in 40 Newton...

The only thing interesting about the deal is the Pelican case and the choice of cartridges. I know they are of nice quality, but they just don't float my boat. If I want a switch barrel rifle, the Sauer 200/202 system is hard to beat...

Lou, the 202 is a very nice rifle as well, and a bit more traditional in appearance. Changing barrels is a bit more of a PITA on a Sauer, but that's not something you'd normally do in the field anyway. I've had several Sauer 202 rifles.

Jerry, different rifles = different triggers, stock fits, sight pictures, etc.

Exactly! Each rifle is unique in it's own way and each presents its own set of challenges and each can be tailored for a specific purpose, or they can be made as identical as you might want. Half the fun of shooting and hunting is diversity! Besides the rifle and action perfect for a Louisiana swamp deer isn't exactly ideal for a Wyoming elk or New Mexico pronghorn or squirrels in the pecan tree or gator on the end of the line. As far as I'm concerned each cartridge choice I make is for a purpose that may be best served by subtle or not so subtle changes in the stock, choice of action, sights, barrel weight and length, trigger, etc.

Now as for the Blaser; it is undoubtedly a fine rifle and an engineering marvel. It is strong, accurate, and versatile. Unfortunately I find its style and finish to be gaudy and unappealing. But that is just me and if we all liked the same thing what would we have to talk about?

I am now an official "Dark Side Participant". Picked up my R8 Professional package yesterday and all is well with it's arrival. Mounted a scope and bore sighted the 9.3 X 62 barrel and hopefully will shoot it in the next day or two at my "home" range. The .270 Win barrel is waiting to have a scope mounted and sorting out will follow on it as well.

I can already feel the "force", and now know the Dark Side is the Right Side.

While the Model 98 such and such may well be perfect They kept searching till Winchester finally got it right with the 54 and not being satisfied they then went on to produce the Model 70. The Blaser is nearest to a non gun than anything I can think of --



I'm still thinking - cannot think of an uglier piece of sporting equipment. I didn't know what a 'black hole' looked like till I saw a Blaser. Please refresh my memory - Darth WAS a bad guy WASN'T he????????????????????? I think they have a special type of Doctor for people with that type of problem. Don't really know what they are called but I have heard them referred to as 'head doctors'. Maybe someone could recommend one.

I suspect that Blasers were really designed and manufactured in France and are smuggled across the border into Germany for sale.

As an engineer with a long background in manufacturing I have to laugh when I see one.
It is obviously a bunch of marketing gimmicks parading as a rifle. I feel sorry for Blaser engineers since only a marketing dept could dream up the requirement for the blaser bolt action abortions.

I cannot for the life of me look upon the Blaser as a sound design....who needs straight-pull in a
hunting rifle..??

Also the looks and balance seems awkward to me..
Only plus I see is that it is detachable and easy to travel with..

The Blaser owners are indeed the Sith Lords here...and the Mauser lot are the Jedis..!!

That said, I have to admit being intrigued with the switch barrel concept, which in my case has led me to acquire a Mauser 66 with barrels in 7X66 SE vom Hofe, 8X68S and 9.3X64. My main issue now is the Weatherby style '60's stock, which I am contemplating replacing with one a la Gary Goudy.



I have to say that after owning several straight pull and quasi straight pull rifles, I wouldn't care to rely on one as a hunting rifle. With enough practice, a genuine bolt action can be manipulated just as fast, so again it is an issue of trying to replace skill with technology, while at the same time sacrificing the advantages of the bolt action, such as reliable extraction under extreme circumstances.

You have some interesting 66 barrels. I have the "American" set. 243,270,308 w/sights,3006.

R8 barrels are easier to store in the safe than another complete rifle, they are also easier to transport to the hunting area.

Biebs converted me to the dark side about 2 years ago. If I had to get rid of all my rifles and keep just one I would keep the R8.
Slick action, accurate, superb trigger and the safest rifle to hunt with if you like to carry a round in the chamber. When space is really tight I can add a right hand bolt for my wife or son and everyone is happy.

I have a "thing" about sets. My first set was three virtually identical double heat treated Springfield sporters, made back in the early 1960's, in calibers 7mm Remington Magnum, .375-.338 (.375 Taylor), and .458 Winchester Magnum, all stocked identically by Hal Hartley. I considered them my "African battery", but I never took to Africa.

Instead, I took my Krieghoff "Teck" O/U double rifle with barrel sets in .458 WM, .375 H&H Magnum and 20 gauge 3" Magnum.

Later I built a set on Oberndorf Mauser actions in 6.5X.308 (.260 Remington), .308 Winchester and .356 Winchester, all stocked identically with classic stocks and Niedner buttplates and grip caps.

Finally I built a set of three rifles, all on P14 Enfield actions, in calibers .375, .416 and .505, all on the same case, a .460 Weatherby shortened to 2.500" and necked down appropriately. The cartridges easily duplicated the performance of the .375 H&H, .416 Rigby and .505 Gibbs with a standard length action, but since I could also duplicate the .375 H&H with my .375/.338 and the .416 Rigby with my .416/.300 Winchester Magnum, I considered those two cartridges redundant and ended up selling the rifles. The .505, however, accompanied me to Africa three times.

This lark with the Mauser 66 is just the latest edition of a long ingrained habit.

Sorry but it is the just the other way round: R8 over R93 any time. A much more bigger (read finally safer) action and nicely balanced especially for the larger calibres. It is not actively promoted but you can get it without IMHO usesless feature of the detachable trigger box.
