I have a new blr in 358 and while i plan to use it for deer and black bear i wanted to also use it for close range moose hunting. I was going to use 200 grain bullets but have seen i can get 2400-2450 fps out of the speer 220 .In your opinion do you think i should stick with the 220's or would the 200's get the job done.I am talking max ranges of 100 yds.

The 250 grain Speer Spitzer worked very well for me on elk and I have no doubt it would do as well on moose. Using H-BLc2, slightly over 2300 fps was recorded out of my BLR.

I also like the 200 grain bullets but think it would be a bit better to use the 220 grain Speer flat nose. I ordered 3 boxes of Speer 250 grain spitzers and plan on working up full power loads with Winchester's 748. Supposedly recoil is a different horse with the 250's over the 200 grainers. This weekend, tonight, hopefully I will get to test some 200 grain Hornady PSP's on a big feral hog. If I get full penetration on a big one I figure it will do for most anything. I also have some of the Remington 200 RNCL's still loaded and may use them as I know that is one tough bullet.

Take a look at the 200gr and 225gr North Fork.

N E 450 has it. Look at the Northforks in 225 gr for moose. Good luck. And RickT put some photos up in the hog hunting forum if you can. Packy

Either will work but so will the Nosler Partition 225gr without any doubts with H4895.

I use the 180 Speer for deer and black bear.

It will take a deer down and keep it down as well as anything.

For moose I would use the 225 Partition.

Picture is of a 220 grain Speer FP from a .350 RM at 2660 fps... Broke the shoulder joint of a 265# black bear and then angled down through the lungs and was found under the skin on the far side...and the bullet cost a whole 25 cents... My friend has killed 3 black bear in a row..bang flop...one so fast it's head was still in the bait bucket....

I realy like the 225 sierra for deer and would use the nosler partition for bear or larger game. 2400fps is great for these bullets.

I thought the nosler 225 was to long for the BLR clip , have you guys been using the nosler in the BLR?

That's the Nosler Partition which is shorter than the B-tip.

Thanks Whelen Nut in thought it was the partition that was to long for the clip. Theres only a 5 grain difference in weight but i guess the partition would get the nod over the speer any day for moose and elk. Thanks again

How are the speer grand slam bullets , i read they can achieve 2400 fps with the 250 GS in blr with a 20" Is that so ?

I am using 225 gr Barnes TSX in my .358. I get just over 2400 FPS in a 20" barrel and have had real good luck with them on big hogs which is the only game animal I've shot with my .358.

I really like the 225 gr Sierra, but would probably opt for the Partition or the like. Unfortunately the B-Tip or Accubond is too long for the BLR mag. Lou

I am currently getting and average vel. of 2410fps from my Winchester 94 20" barrel in .356 using the Speer 220 grainers. Hope to use them this fall. The .356 is pretty much just a "rimmed" version of the .358

When in doubt, go with the heavier bullet. Especially in close cover.
