The only modern "short" mags I think deserves more time in the sunshine is Dakota's cartridges. 7mm, 300, 338, 375. I whish they added 8mm, 9,3 and 358 [Smile]

Spoke with the local Remington Rep today and their choice of the 8mm as the "classic" offering for 2004. When I brought it up he laughed and mentioned that Rem has basically run out of calibers to offer. I mentioned the .338-06 and he told me to e mail RP with that thought, as the Factory listend to the public over what the Reps have to say.

There are some alternatives to the Norma loadings as well; S&B makes a good load at 196gr. and Igman has 170 gr.s.p. load that is excellent.

I buy several 8x57 milsurps per month and have tried to date over 30 types of commercial and surplus ammos.

Today I was shooting an M24/47 Yugo that I bought several months ago, It was grouping the Igman ammo on average at 1.3" for 5 shot 100yd. groups (sandbagged).

I've killed 4 deer and 3 hogs with the Igman ammo and bullet performance is almost identical to Rem CORE-LOKT soft points.

I look forward to the Classic, if for no other reason than the possibility of better American made ammo.

No , But I will rebarrel my HVA 1600 Special from 30-06 to 7x64 this fall. Norma will do the job. Schulz & Larsen barrel.
I am very fond of my Brno ZG 47 that Norma rebarreled to a .404 Jeffery for 10 years ago. I have bought some Stewart 425 gr SP bullets that i will test.
I am also interested in Ackley's improved version of the 9,3x74R. I saw that Torsbohandels are selling new "Classic" (Sabatti) SBS double rifles for 18500Sekr USD$~2300 in 9,3x74R. If one could get some 100fps extra with the Ackley I think this rifle would be very interesting...?
Of course you have to regulate it for the Ackley Imp version

Norma made a wonderful job! They raised the magazine walls with about 1,5 mm so the magazine takes 3 rounds. The rifle works very well. I have still not used it in Africa (my two Hva 1600.s the secomnd in 9,3x62 has served my well), but that will come next year i think.

After exchanging E-mails on the subject with CZ-USA, apparently the CZ-550 in 8 x 57 is made by the firm but not imported to the USA. :-(

Looks like the Rem 700 will be the critter. Maybe Remington will load some European-level ammunition in 8 x 57 as well. Leupold 3x-9x atop the rifle.......that'll work.

In answer to Bob 257's question on bullets for the 8X57, the choice of bullets in 8mm is kind of thin right now. I have a sporterized k98 that I reload for. My particular rifle doesn't seem to like the lighter bullets but I have just under 1" groups with the Nosler 180 grain ballistic tips and the Speer 200 grain spitzers. I just bought a box of Nosler partitions that I'm going to try.

This sporterized k98 is a real nice rifle and it's a lot of fun to shoot. I'll be using it for hunting now that I've developed some good loads.

In the Remington classic, what is the safe pressure limit for the 8x57? Would I be able to load to around 52,000 psi? Would the brass be a limiting factor? The factory ammo seems to be limited to around 47,000 according to SAAMI. Could I safely produce my own +P loads?
